1968 Dodge Dart GT Sleeping Beauty?

Finally received the taillight bezels and more importantly the C gaskets that were holding me back.

To my engine builder Chad
I got tags and license on it today. Took it for a drive. It runs really well handles nice a little bit of rub on some of the tight turns. My only issue is is there is a noise like almost in a break drum or a universal joint or after kind of jacking it up maybe the yolk on the rear end if that's possible. If I'm driving down the road at certain RPMs, it goes away if I put it in neutral and read the engine I don't hear anything again if I'm underload there, there's no noise.

Of Course it won't start for the last 20 minutes I was gonna do a video. I've got it jacked up off the floor so hopefully maybe I can do it and replicate the noise.

It really has all the power and cruises along at 55 and 60 without any issue at all

Chad
Great !
About how fast would you say it's going when it shifts from 1st to 2nd and from second to drive?

Holt
All that seems pretty spot on. Maybe even when I got down on a little bit, it seemed as though you know it dropped drop down with the kickdown.

Chad Ok Good

Holt
I knew there was a little interference on the driver side rear spreader bar that I believe was tapping thispress in studs I thought I had ground it down to where it was not touching. Maybe that's what it is.

When I spin it jacked up in the air, I can't make even the clicking sound happen

Hopefully tomorrow when it cools down and cranks up, I can do a video and we can see if we can replicate it. But I think it really runs well. Little bit of transmission fluid leaking. Not sure where that's coming from. Noticed that tonight when I put it off the lift.

Chad Always hard to duplicate , sound can travel thru other places to trick you

Holt always two steps forward and then one step back!!!

Ran the Dart on Engine Stands. Ran it in gear. No noise? 92 year old dad is pointing to the universal joints. As good a guess as I have. No noise from the rear or suspect brake drum. I hope to get it back on the road and have an extra set of ears listening. Being under a load can replicate the noise and having the suspension on the ground makes a difference. Can a universal joint make a noise like a tire going down?

Definitely a rotating noise. Pinion or universal joints. Load takes away the sound. It will come apart this weekend.
Road test, it ran fine. Vent in filler neck seems to be clogged. One lifter making a small noise. Light at the end of the tunnel may be a train. Hope not.

When you had it in the air did you by chance use a 2x4 to put resistance on a wheel and see if the noise came or went?

And when I say 2x4 I mean a short piece that you hold against the tire tread with your hand, not a long lever arm that the car could use to climb off the jack stands with.

Friday
I took the Dart to Chads shop. We drove it and it ran pretty darn good. You could hear the noise. We narrowed it to the universal joints or the rear. He was going to get it on his lift. Any load made the noise go away.

Definitely I also have a venting issue in the tank that needs to be resolved.

Also my front tires rub on sharp turns. (This will have to be corrected when I’ve got some more money in the bank.)

Saturday
From Chad
It was the rear spider gears. So I took parts from the original rear & made it work.

Couldn't find any trans leaks

I think the venting issue that will eventually cause vapor lock slipped off the radar. He said he’s gonna take a look at it before I pick it up on Sunday.

I think with the gear ratio I have, it should be a real jewel to drive. The pollen here is the worst I’ve ever seen. My son said it looks like we live in a chemical war zone. We’ve had rain not enough to wash it away.

My plans are to go to local car show Friday night and then I knew Cars and coffee that seems to be a hit with 350 to 400 cars over the last few weekends.

That's funny. My builder reused my trac loc spider gears rather than put new gears I supplied because he said there was no reason to replace them.

I ran it for about 30-40 minutes. The temperature gauge slowly creeped up. Drove home when it went to the night side. It still was in the OK range. I ordered a fan spacer to see if that will have an effect.

If the temp rise steadily while driving at more than 35 mph and not stopping then you have a water flow issue.

If it creeps up at idle that's an airflow issue

I would look for a 7 blade fan that is small enough to fit the shroud but closer to the ID of the shroud, AND a spacer to move the fan 1/2 in and 1/2 out

I marked where the temperature was at the end of the ride. OS temperature 89/91. Where is the considered normal spot. Stock 318 Automatic?

I’m thinking about disconnecting the dash gauge off the sending unit temporarily just lay one under the hood

1/2 gauge is in the 190 to 200 210 range.

The temp gauge is good enough for most applications.

If you can get or make a 23 ohm resister you can check your gauges accuracy.

23 ohms is 1/2 gauge movement.

10 is full gauge movement.

Radiator accepted another 1/2 gallon of antifreeze. Seemed to run in the normal range. Puked a little to get to a good level after expansion. Waiting for my fan and spacer.

My fan spacer was too long so that is not a go with my new fan.

The new fan is definitely pushing a lot more air. The radiator fluid has settled. I installed a new temp gauge. It is a day in the 60/70 range. I like what I see so far after driving for about 20 minutes.

More time driving the Dart. It is a pain to start. Likes to flood easily. Still figuring the fuel gauge. I have been using a can and adding a little. Need to get to a gas station. I am happy with the way it drives.
Ran past two of my sons houses and the wives were positive. GD seems happy as well.

Quick update. I have been to two shows. I trailered it both times due to the distances and having very limited time on the Dart. The new fan solved the engine temperature issue. More coolant also made a big difference.
The vapor lock issue, I believe was more of a vent issue on my gas tank. I was looking to solve the problem by using a vented gas cap. One of the guys at the car show on Saturday pointed out that was not a very good way to solve a problem. I went home, pulled the vent line off of the fill tube in the trunk. I blew it out. The restriction on the tube is at the flare on the rubber 3 inch connection. I tapped it out just a little bit bigger with a drillbit. Now I can run it and immediately check the gas cap. There’s no pressure you can sit the Dart in the sun and it still doesn’t build pressure.
As the Mopar fanatic explained at the car show, the fuel pump may be pulling 5 pounds on a good day and it’s trying to pull against the gas tank. It’s a losing proposition, correcting the gas tank pressure problem pretty much the way the factory intended it to work really seems to have cured everything.

Another highlight today other than spending time with my lovely wife on a 16 mile bike ride, was having my oldest son take the car and go to his in-laws for dinner and then back home without having any issues. 3 years were worth it all with just with that one thing

Next weekend is a pretty good car show that I love going to. It’s all old stuff 81 and older and I am driving that car. The car trailer is staying home. Wish me luck.

That is awesome! It's the little things that both make our heads spin and excite the heart when we find them

We have been hitting a lot of local shows. Wife after 40 plus years actually attended one. Her comment was; they were pretty nice people.

I have been trying to get my wife to go for years.

She loves reading so told her to bring a book and recline in my zero gravity chairs under the tent and read all day.

I think if I had AC in the tent she might buy into it!
