1968 'Match Race City'

Barracuda

Many combinations for both cars, as the 68' Barracuda was available with
the 'Mini Hercules 340/275 HP, and the 383/300 HP 'Commando'.

Available in the Notchback Coupe, Fastback or Convertible - with either a
4-Speed or A-727 Torque-Flite Automatic.

Available Gears with Sure-Grip.........3.23 / 3.55 / 3.91

Camaro

Many combinations for the 68' Camaro, as the 327/275 HP was the
'base performance engine'.

A Camaro SS350 came through with a 350/295 HP engine.

And, a Camaro SS396 was available with a big-block 396/325 HP

The above cars were available in both the Coupe and Convertible,
and could be purchased with a 4-Speed or an Automatic.

And the 'special' Z-28, with a 302/290 HP 'Performance Engine', but
was only available as a 4-Speed, and only in the Coupe.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note; For the 'purposes' of this comparison in 'Match Race City', the
SS396 396/375 HP is not part of the debate.

The 68' Barracuda 383/300 HP 4-Speed would handle the 68' Camaro 327/275 HP
4-Speed, but this would be a closer race than expected.

With 3.91 Gears, the Barracuda was around 14.60's @ 96 MPH.

The Barracuda still had a somewhat 'strangled' exhaust system, and the
Hydraulic Camshaft {.425/.437" Lift ~ 264*/268* Duration ~ 40* Overlap}
was not that strong.

The weight {#3161 lbs.} did not hamper the Notchback with the 383 all that much,
as the low Horsepower 383 was more of a 'Torque-Bull'.

The Camaro at #2968 lbs. was {#193 lbs.} lighter than the Mopar, and off the line
the Chevy would have have had a big advantage.

The 68' Camaro with the 327/275 HP and 4-Speed, had the 12-Bolt Rear, and the
M-20 Wide-Ratio {2.52 1st-Gear} worked good with the 275 HP Engine.

The 3.73 Gears with the (Code #G80} Posi-Traction was a must with the Camaro
with a 4-Speed.

And the Rear-Suspension was equipped with a 5-Leaf Spring unit, with the 4-Speed.

Plus, the Camaro 327/275 HP had the optional 'Dual-Exhaust' with 2 1/2" Piping,
which was bigger piping than the A-Body with the 383.

Rims and Tires.
* Barracuda ..........14 x 5.5" with E-70 x 14"
* Camaro..............14 x 6" with F-70 x 14" {Optional}

Output

Barracuda............300 HP @ 4400 RPM.........400 Ft/Lbs. of Torque @ 2400 RPM

Camaro...............275 HP @ 4800 RPM........355 Ft/Lbs. of Torque @ 3200 RPM

'"......but this would be a closer race than expected."

So you've told us Who won?
The Barracuda?

The Who, What, Where, When, Why, They, Them and How.

The Camaro came off the line much quicker, and immediately pulled out to a 2-Car
Length lead by the end of 1st-Gear.

The 'Higher-Reving' 327 was able to hit 2nd-Gear first, and held it's 2-car Length
lead as the 383 'chugged' behind.

By the Mid-Way Point down the Track, the Camaro banged into the 3rd-Gear (again quicker]
than the Barracuda.

But once the Barracuda hit 3rd-Gear {1.39 Ratio}, it pulled on the Camaro as the
327 was 'winding-out at 5000 RPM's.

At the 1000 Foot Mark, the 383 Barracuda started to make a strong move, as
the Big-Block was now breathing and staying in it's 'RPM Power-Groove'.

Once the 383 Barracuda hit 4th-Gear, it picked up speed {MPH's}, and went by the
327 Camaro at the 1200 Foot Mark.

The Barracuda won by a 'solid' Car Length.

Result........
* Barracuda....... 14.67 @ 96.3 MPH
* Camaro........... 14.85 @ 93.4 MPH

I raced a neighbor that had AMC pacer I'm my 5hp Tecumseh Sears drover mini bike and believe it or not I was ahead for a full block when she finally blew past me. We clocked that mini at about 48mph or so it had a 2 speed jack shaft and I was maybe 85 lbs.. She was pissed her car was so slow.

Don't let my sister hear that.........she hated those 'Decal-Splashed'
plastic-finned Trans Am's.

Compliment much appreciated though.............
