"1968 Match Race City" 68' Barracuda vs. 68' Camaro

-
Nice ET Frank,

This 'thread' is from the 'Match City Races' at New York National Speedway
in Center Moriches, Long Island, New York back in early-1968.

Dealership Races.

Frank,

Reports from the 'Match City Races' were that the 383 Barracuda sounded like it
had 'mashed' potato's stuffed in the Exhaust Pipes.

Exhaust System; Flat spots in the pipe network, numerous bends and turns, 'pretzel-shaped'
driver side exhaust manifold, and a restrictive heat-riser baffle. Some sections appear to
have a 'squashed' 1 1/2" diameter pipe size. Kills power output.

Shifter; Our Barracuda was equipped with a 'newly added' Hurst-linkage Shifter, which was
a significant improvement over the earlier 'Inland Shifter' that was in our previously tested Barracuda.

Clutch; Adequate for 'street-use', but under a work-load at the Track, it rates no higher
than a 'B-'.

Engine; The 383 has good torque, but it has difficulty in getting the RPM's up to enter the power-range.
Whether it's the restrictive exhaust system or 'mild' Camshaft, both restrict the 383 from reaching it's
full potential.

Fast Eddie,

The 'Test' was performed by "LIR" Long Island Racers Club out of Hempstead, Long Island.

Tony Stefanese of 'Hempstead Plymouth' ran the stock 68' Barracuda 383/300 HP 4-Speed
with 3.91 Gears and ran 14.70's @ 96 MPH {Best 14.67 @ 96.3 MPH}

Then later 'swapped' out the stock 'mild' Camshaft for a 426 Street Hemi Grind {Hydraulic} unit.

*} 383/300 HP Camshaft {Hydraulic}...............{.425"/.437" Lift ~ 264*/268* Duration ~ 40* Overlap}
*} Street Hemi Grind Camshaft {Hydraulic}......{.471"/.474" Lift ~ 280*/280* Duration ~ 70* Overlap ~ 110* CL}.

Said it was worth +20 Horsepower, and the Barracuda 383 ran 14.35's @ 98 MPH
with no other modifications.
