1968 Mopar Street-Race ~ Road Runner 383 vs. GTX 440

-
GTX though a bit heavy, the 440 would have better top end.

That Would Be Correct

With both running 727 Automatics and 3.91 Gears.

The Road Runner 383 would clearly get the better of the two 'out-of-the-hole'. And
more than hold it's own thru mid-track.

The {139 lb.} lighter weight and higher stall-rate Converter would give the
higher revving 383 a nice advantage on the bottom-end.

But, the GTX with the 'big ol' 440 would start to breathe by mid-track, and
pull even at the end of Mid-Range.

On Top-End, forget about it. ............ 440 'Super Commando'

I thought we were talk'n street race, not 1/4 mile. lol I think the RR wins in the 1/8

1968

The Carter AVS {630 CFM} Carburetor did the 383 {no favors} at Top End.

The Big-Block literally starved for Fuel over 4500 RPM's.

Now, pop on an 'Edelbrock' Dual-Plane Aluminum High-Rise Intake and a
'Holley' 780 CFM w/Vacuum Secondaries.........

And we've got a closer and more competitive Race.

To make all things equal,

The Road Runner 383 would require an Edelbrock Aluminum Intake Manifold,
a Holley {780 CFM} Carburetor, and Headers to stay even with the GTX 440
at the Track.

That is with both having the same Rear-End Gears.

Pretty much ,sums it up,69 440.. Back in the 383 Magnum Coronet revival( reringed low buck 383 Mag,lapped valves ,re ringed short block.bigger capacity oil pan, worked oiling system) We slapped a TM7 /3310 up top, Magnum manifolds ,with big exhaust (3"she screamed, lol) Scary part: It worked( Road Runner converter, 3:23's..).. It went 13:90'/14:00 's in 100 degree heat at Famoso..No head work, basic attention ,to what's needed, it only comes from education & experience...

Correct,

The Carter AVS {630 CFM} was the 'Air/Fuel Restrictor' on the 383.

The 383 needed a #3310 Holley 780 CFM to run at higher RPM's to unleash
that hidden Horsepower.

It was worth about +15 HP.

The Mopar combination to run at the track back in 1968, the GTX 440 with
an Automatic.

NHRA Stock Class ....... D/SA

NHRA Super Stock Class ..... Either SS/F or SS/FA

Based on cost and ease of street drive-ability, the Road Runner 383 was the way to go.

Plus, for about $400 you could make them wheel fairly quick, and not have to worry
about breaking anything.

ok, your race and your street. I missed it . I was waiting at the stop light. you spin, you lose!

Yes, you could get the 440/375 HP in the above '3' Big-Body Cars.

What the Super High Performance 383 option could have been...mighta changed Mopar history as we know it. Bench racing for sure.

So if the 630 cfm carb on the 383 RR engine was too small what did the 440 Magnums come with?

Carter AVS Carburetors

383
Primary ........ 1 7/16"
Secondary .... 1 11/16"
CFM Rating .... 630

440
Primary ........ 1 11/16"
Secondary .... 1 11/16"
CFM Rating ..... 750

Didn't know,the 440 AVS,was rated at 750.... Not bad,for a 383.. Still like the 3310 Holley,on almost everything . ( so versatile..)

When I first got my 69 Roadrunner it had the 383 mag and it ran really nice, but when I swapped to the 440 mag it was obvious that the 440 had a lot more guts.
Same car, same weight, quite a bit faster.

I'll also go with the GTX
