The gauge cluster in my Valiant is being temperamental at the moment... :banghead:

To start, the speedometer is acting very strange. The needle jumps like crazy for no reason-- for example, I will be going 25 MPH and it will be jumping up and down from 25 MPH to 60 MPH very rapidly. I'm not sure if this is a sign that it's going to break soon, or if the needle needs to be oiled up or something. It also looks a little crooked too for some reason...what do you guys think of this?

Now, to the gasoline and temperature gauges-- both don't work whatsoever. I know that these had problems with the gasoline gauge, but I'm not sure if it's the gauge itself or possibly a bad sensor in the gas tank (which I would have to drop if it was). As for the temperature gauge, I think that is hooked up the the manifold somewhere if I'm not mistaken. What do you guys think it could be and also how to fix them?

I would really like to get these all working properly if it's possible. The only gauge that works is the alternator gauge. Anyway, I just thought I would ask, any information on how to fix these is much appreciated!

Your voltage reducer has failed, get a new one. It reduces the voltage for the temp and fuel gauge together. Speedometer sounds like the cable is failing?

Why the entire speedometer appears to be cocked sideways in the housing is a mystery to me. 2 screws hold it in the housing. There are metal tubes through rubber isolators where those screws go through the housing. Something missing there maybe ?
I suggest you first download a service manual then remove the inst' panel.

I drove the car in the night for the first time last night and the dashboard lights don't work either :banghead:

OP:

If you do a search there is tons of stuff on this site written about gauge troubles

Consider pulling the cluster, looking it over, fixing problems, and testing out of the car. Then worry about harness wiring / connections, and senders

On my 67.....

broken / loose PC board connector pins

bad IVR

bad IVR SOCKET

loose nuts on the gauge studs

A very very quick dirty check is to ground the temp or fuel sender wire, turn on the key for a few seconds. Gauge should peg at full. Do NOT leave it on longer than to test
