1969 ~ 440 'Cuda 'M-Code' vs. COPO #9561 Camaro

-
What would have matched up with the HEMI A -bodies?
Mopar A-bodies were kinda out classed when it came to big blocks when compared to the GM stuff. Ford seem to have the same problem to a lesser degree.
It seemed that MoPar didn't want these cars to compete with the B-body, I'm sure there was more profit in the B-body.
It seem that Dodge & Plymouth was pushed into installing the big engines, while GM would throw one in anything they had.
I would think with some better engineering, that these would have been deadly.
How close are the weights of the L72 & 440?
Did the Camaro's & Nova's have better weight transfer or was the thought at GM was to bring a big stick & let the customer get it stuck to the ground.

Well I dont mean to be the bearer of bad news but we all know that apples for apples and oranges for oranges this comparison is not equal by no means and i really dont give a rats nut about camaros or chevys or fords,bottom line is all things equal and a level playing field the MOPAR will come out on top and thats bottom line...this is like comparing a new challenger with the 5.7 hemi of the showroom floor stock to the newer mustang or camaro souped up versions that the biassed magazine and cheby and fraud lovers love to promote....we all know weight for weight and hp near equal and same fuel/tires and circumstances that majority of the wins will be MOPAR....

Rb Dart,

If you look closely, way down the end of the Highway, the owner of the COPO Camaro
is picking up a 'Connecting Rod' that he sent through the side of his #L-72 427 Engine Block

A cast iron Copo 427 BBC camaro was every bit of 3400 lbs. if it was a recport head motor, it would of been a real handful. It would of came with hi compression pistons, high lift solid lifter cam, 4.10-4.56 gears.

The M code was a really thrown together deal as having just restored one. I wasn't to impressed with what they expected it to do with what they built, TERRIBLE cam, TERRIBLE exhaust system, gear and tire was sub par.

I dont know what they were thinkin...

You mean you havent heard? Oblama won and we're screwed..lol..I'm still waiting for that answer myself....

I'd rather not talk politics as I personally have done well no matter who the president was or is..

I just wanted to know who won between both cars even though I was there :)

805 Mopar Kid,

They really weren't built for 'Street Use'. Plymouth just wanted to get them out there
to some Drag Racing 'oriented' Dealers to run in C/SA or SS/GA for 1969, as well as a
few selected 'Cuda Gearheads.........

They were thrown out there to be torn apart, and set-up for Drag Racing.

By the way, my 10" Drum Brakes never stopped my 69' 440 'Cuda..........

C-Man,

There was a difference in weight between the 4-Speed and Automatic 1969 'COPO'
Camaro of +57 lbs.

The NHRA based the weight factor on 'Base Shipping Weight', not added Options.

No..nope, dont think it was a rod,looked at it closely...see the 2 fresh eggs in front of the cuda? yes eggs apparantely over easy no shell in sight..think the guy in the far off distant stretch of hi way is looking for the chicken that was hit...be my guess...

Although both cars were officially "available" to the public, the Cuda could actually be ordered right from the dealership while the Camaro was not advertised as available and you had to be in the know to order one. I believe that is the reason that not very many COPO Camaros exist today! Even most high performance dealerships wouldn't push the car on anyone unless it was a high profile buyer due to the cost! Heck, just the all aluminum motor cost an extra $6K!!! Not what Uncle Cyrus was going to be able to afford!!

My bet would be on the Cuda, not for the win, but in the "available" catagory!! Geof

Production Numbers,

1969 440 'Cuda..................................................................344 'Automatic Only'

1969 'COPO' Camaro #9561 {L-72} Cast Iron 427.............822 '4-Speed'
..........................................................................................193 'Automatic'

1969 'COPO' Camaro #9560 {ZL-1} All-Aluminum 427.......47 '4-Speed'
...........................................................................................22 'Automatic'

In my area {Westchester County, New York} we had several dealerships
who moved a few 1969 'COPO' Camaro's.

* B.F. Curry Chevrolet {Scarsdale}
* Byrne Brothers Chevrolet {White Plains}
* Curry Chevrolet {Yorktown}
* Baldwin Chevrolet {Long Island}

Popularity may come down to magazine coverage.
It always seemed the the GM & COPO stuff had more coverage.
Chrysler also seemed to drop the ball in marketing.
