1969 Barracuda with some possible rare options

-
I read some where that Plymouth came out with the red wheel liners after GM had offered them on one of there cars ( i don't remember what one ). The red was for a for a cosmetic appearance... to look meaner. I'm sure they helped some with Ice and noise, but were offered to compeat with GM.

The red plastic wheel liners first came out on 1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 W-30 optioned cars only. The W-30 option was for the cold-air package that drew cold air from between the headlights in '67 and from under front bumper ducts in '68 through hoses directly into the air cleaner. One of the first factory 'ram-air' setups.

The red wheel house liners started in '68 and i believe they were only on bcudas. Never heard or seen on a Dart. They are very rare to see on a '68. Think they were carried over into '69 and are even rarer to see on a '69! There is a code of J35 so someone might have added them to the car? But maybe this code wasn't put on the fender tag but only on the build sheet.....LOOK for the build sheet!!!!!!
As far as power steering cooler they came on B&E-bodies when a performance axle package was ordered like A31, A32, A33, A34. The steering cooler was part of the max cooling in these axle packages.
CODES: E55-340 engine, D32-auto trans, W1 W1-white body/white roof, D6R-deluxe bucket seats/R-red, R6-red upper door, A01-light package, A04-basic (radio) group, A56-'cuda 340 package, A62-rallye instrument cluster, A86-interior decor group, B51-power brakes, C16-console, C55-bucket seats, G11-tinted glass all windows, G33- LH outside mirror, H51-air conditioning w/ft heater, J25-3 spd variable wipers, L31-turn signal lite hood/fender, M21-drip rail mouldings, M31-body belt mouldings, M47-hood scoops/simulated, N85-tach, R21-AM/FM radio..........

What is the SPD code after the R6????
AGAIN, very cool find, congrats!!!!! Dave

Thanks Dave...the #'s after R6 is 429 142346, do you know what the v76 code is?? Thanks Again GD

Wow, can't believe I missed this find! This is a rare piece with all these options. And the white/red combo will be gorgeous when done. This one deserves a lot of love.

Just an update, years later. The J35 code is on the build sheet but not on the data tag. The build sheet does have the max cooling option on the build sheet (not on the data tag). So the power steering cooler on this car appears to be factory. This car is under construction. There was plenty of damaged body panels being replaced by donor fastback. Will be a very masculine car when put back on the road. Expect another 2 years to completion.

I bought this car from GD years ago and it sat as a place holder in my shop. Amazing example of the hobby. It has red fender well liners on all four corners. All the original parts are on the car. It is now in center of the shop and being taken apart slowly and one piece at a time. Been collecting parts to apply to the project for years. To answer one other point on the old thread, the build sheet does have the 3.55 gears and has the max cooling options The curious thing about this car is the Cuda' is supposed to be the low option car available to beat up on the street and track while the Formula S would be the sophisticated high optioned car with all the bells and whistles. So, to find a Cuda' with so many boxes checked on the build sheet like this has to be unusual. There was a locking gas cap option checked on this build sheet - I am not sure how the flip cap on these cars would have locked.. Found that interesting. Conjecture: I was surprised that the builder back in the day who ordered this car did not include disk brake option it was one of the few creature comfort options not checked (why not a four speed !!??). I wonder if this car sat on a dealership floor to say look at me and check out my options that you can order on your car. It might have been an advertising gimmick. This car was enjoyed. It was beaten up, fixed, driven hard. Hoping to be able to give it a second chance. BTW, the car is White with R6 Delux interior, no hubcaps, red fender well liners and white painted steel wheels with Red line tires. With the black Cuda' stripes it must have been a real looker -

V78 is a stripe delete but that might be in part with the 'Cuda A56 option. There's a guy in Santa Cruz California that is really knowledgeable in the A56/A57 cars and runs a registry. He would be a great help. I'll do some searching, I think I can find his contact info.
V78 deletes the standard pin stripe and is replaced by the Cuda' hood & fender decals, and lower rocker / valance black treatment

So you bought it from moparnutt (GD?) ?

The locking gas cap is an insert under the cap seal. It just blocks someone form siphoning gas or pouring something in. It has no seal, but it may slow down gas running out the tube if you are taking a hard corner. It's the same locking cap offered on 68-70 Chargers (which share the same cap)

They just started repro'ing them: https://www.classicindustries.com/p...1401pp9cHDDFRVvwPBRoCoDQQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I have just purchased a 69 Barracuda with tons of options that might be rare if anyone could give me some insight on these options one is factory rear air, factroy am/fm radio, power steering pump cooler, it also has the red platsic inner fender wells... if anyone has info on the codes for these options or production numbers on these options Any help would be great thanks.
Hey "G" - I just bought a 69 6 cylinder Coupe that has been off the road in Los Angeles for some 30 years. This car has a perfect driver fender and front clip parts to fix the damaged sheet metal on your old 340 FB. Welding is moving forward on the replaced panel parts. Bought all window nylon roller replacement parts to do while the quarter panels are opened up where the damage was. Red Wheel Well Liners are out of the car and I am cleaning those up. Next step is to strip the 3 layers of paint off the car (original white / red respray / white re-respray) and start prepping it for body work. Motor will come out last, as it still is in pretty much factory configuration I will take my time and hopefully motor and paint work are done in parallel and can come together quickly. Hope all is well - will keep you posted as she comes back together.

I did, we still keep in touch a bit. Called him out of the blue a few months back when we started cutting into the car and he still would like his car back. This is a hard one to let go. That was some time ago. I have never seen that locking solution. Is that for sale?

I just bought the NOS one off EBAY. Thank You, that is amazing , I had no idea that solution existed.

Does it have fold down rear seat? That was an extra cost option on fastbacks in '69 where as '67 '68 it was standard on fastbacks.

Wow..very cool car! Like said above, some very rare options! I agree with Dave, I've never seen or heard of a power steering cooler on an A-body? Very nice find! I've been keeping a registry for 340 & 383 cudas, so drop me an email with the details and I'll add it to my registry.

Sent you a PM to discuss your registry. I have four Cuda' optioned cars. Not sure if MoparNutt registered this ever, not sure if you are still doing the registry. I thought possibly that I heard a member in San Diego area was trying to do a Cuda' registry a few years ago. Anyhow, would like to discuss. Check your PM and if you are still engaged with this contact me.

It does have the fold down rear seat. That is a must have option when near the beach. I have had 1st Gen cars that you can slip your surfboard in through the trunk, beach gear and take advantage of all that space. Easy fun day at the beach. Someone always wants to chat. I always like to use the cars I build Not sure if I would do that with this particular car........

I asked original owner of my car, who special ordered it, why no 4 spd? He said 4 spd would double insurance so he added the extra cost auto trans option to the order.

Now that is interesting. how things change. compare a 4 speed insurance in 1969 to say a jailbreak challenger with 1000 HP now. I would have bought the 4 speed

The rear defogger option would only be seen as "not particularly desirable" by someone who doesn't drive their car. Having landed a Dart that originally came with that option, it was useful enough that I bought and installed the option on both of my other Darts...

Orig owner of our Cali Cuda had it installed at dealership. Not the greatest, but better than nada, and adds to the uniqueness of our car.

Owned a few of these and none ever had the option installed. I know growing up on East Coast Maryland area that the option would have been very useful. Not so much here in SoCal

The wheel well linner came in only one color ( red ). I dont know why that is. Their purpose was to prevent ice and snow from accumulating in the wheel well but their big plus is a quieter cabin. I would love to have a set of those too. Last I saw on ebay fetched a little over 500.00 for all 4.
Steering fluid cooler was part of a towing package I think. That package didn't include much else, right door mirror, heavy duty signal flasher.

I have to disagree with you about the red wheel well liners. I owned and raced mopars in high school 1970-72 and owned a new 68 Barracuda 340 4sp Formula S then. Red wheel liners for the Barracuda were offered as a "sport" option to match the red liners that came on the Olds 442. The liners had nothing to do with "snow accumulation" as all cars in the U.S. had front and rear inner fender wheel liners as part of the body. I have a set of the red liners on my 68 Barracuda which is an exact recreation of the car I had in high school. I paid A LOT of money for these liners and there isn't much information available on them. I have a pretty extensive A-body library and in one article I have (from 69) that mentions this option said that only around 50 cars were ordered with this option. the liners are listed as an option in both the 1968 and 1969 Barracuda brochure.

This is from the Formula S section of the 1968 Barracuda dealer brochure.

There's optional items that could be used for various things that might not be mentioned in a 2-3 word sales tag line. Like a "performance gauge" could be used as an economy meter on a /6 car since it's just a vacuum gauge. And in other cars they were marketed that way. Especially in the 70's and 80's. Or disc brakes that also would be great for towing.

Chrysler's objective was to sell you an option and make some money $$$. They don't give a darn what you used it for or benefit from it. You can drill down an item to have many benefits, but advertisers try to predict what the top benefits are for selling. They are not always right.

Alright. I'm surprised to see a few long time members getting into a pissing contest.
Knock it off and lead by example.
