1970 NHRA National Records 'Stock Class'

-
Interesting.

Only one Plymouth in the manual trans classes.

But scroll down to the Automatics and the top half of all the classes is nearly all Mopar!

That should get July 27th named "National TorqueFlight Day"!

Too Many Chevy 4-Speed's

They were very tough in Stock Class, especially the 4-Speeds.

Mopar was very competitive in {B/Stock} with the 1970 Barracuda '426 Hemi' and Dodge Challenger '426 Hemi'.

The 1969 1/2 Road Runner '440 Six-Barrel' and Super Bee '440 Six-Pack'
cars were strong competitors in {E/Stock}.

In {F/Stock}, the 440 GTX and R/T cars were productive.

The 340 A-Body cars were strong competitors in {G/Stock}

The 1970 Challenger T/A '340 Six-Pack' cars were just starting to make
a move in {G/Stock}.

The 383 4-Speed - B-Body cars 'lagged' in {G, H and I} Stock.

Hope I am not out of date on this reply, just found the thread.

The list of car model /engine to go along with the et/mph records is very helpful. I am trying to Gonkulate all these combos but without the car model and engine/horsepower, not much can be done with the list.

However, I could not get all the combos to make sense.
Here are some guesses I made at edits: See if they make sense!

A/S 66 Corvette: My guess is a 427/425 for 66. IIRC the 396/425 was 1965 only?

H/S=10.50 68 Chev: I think this was an L48 Nova, 3106/295=10.53

Next is the massive assault on J, K, L by Chevy and the few-months-only LM1, which by then had been factored to 270hp. To get my Gonkulator to match those LM1 et/mph, I have to use every trick I know and a few more – I always need good air and a tailwind to make them match. The LM1 itself was underrated, not as much as the 340 Mopar but still underrated, and the prep on these LM1 engines/cars was excellent.

J/S=11.50 as noted, Nova LM1 350/255, 3188/270=11.81

K/S=12.00 I can’t make this work as a Camaro since 3126/270=11.58.Unless I use the original so 3126/255=12.26, but by late 1970 the factored hp was already 270. The Chevelle 300 2dr fits at 3266/270hp=12.10. Comments welcome!?

L/S=12.50 as noted, Camaro Convertible 3375/270=12.50 right on the class break.

M/S=13.00 Nova SS fits this break at 2868/220=13.04. I was once offered a rust-free 283/220 4spd Nova SS for $2000 and said I didn’t have room. I should have made room.

N/S=14.00 I am guessing a Chev 210 2dr here for 3157/225=14.03

O/S=15.00 I cant get the Handyman Special to work since 3280/225=14.58 so my guess for a wagon is a Beauville 9pass at 3495/225=15.53, closest car I could find.

I also have Stock Automatic results from 1970 Indy, but similar issue – having to guess the model, CID, horsepower. Sometimes it’s obvious, sometimes not.

Very interested in 1971 also since it was the last year of the high-compression engines, 426 hemi, 440 6-pack, Ford 429scj, etc. And in 1972 the class rules got weird anyway. But I cant find this same results sheet from 1971 – let alone guess the engines.

Hey, this is good American history!

Hi Deuce, pretty cool you found this thread. The member Paul/69 Cuda 440 passed away recently but Im sure someone will chime in here.
Paul was old school and posted a lot of threads like this one. Do a search and enjoy!
