1972 Scamp "Smokey" - Saved From Wildfire

-
We got ourselves a hot rod, boys! The car is back at my shop and the cage came out awesome.

If any of you guys are near Central Oregon and are needing a cage and/or any fabrication done, check out Meticulous Metalworks. Matt did a phenomenal job and I'm not easy to impress. Everything is tucked and the welds look like dimes. Pictures don't do them justice.

As per the advice of my chassis builder buddy, we got those rear down bars as far back as we could. The X was added at the top because those rear bars are almost 7ft long and he wanted to add more rigidity.

I also had him add an extra pair of downward support bars directly over the rear axle for when I switch over to ladder bars next year. I'll mount the rear coilovers directly beneath these plates.

Can't get tighter than that. The man had a plan.

He was even able to keep my rearview mirror :)

I'm scheduled to get the cage certified on April 6th. Should be making passes here in the Spring. Overall, I'm a happy guy.

Just love everything about this car. It's color. The use. The fact that it survived nature's wrath? Special deal, man. Glad you're sharing.

Very nice!, I am curious if you weighed it after the cage?

Much appreciated. I have not re-weighed it yet. I definitely need to so I can reset my preloads.

With the interior removed (-116lbs)and the fiberglass bumpers/brackets (-55lbs), I'm thinking it'll come in somewhere around 2,950lbs with the cage. This is about as far as I'm going to lighten it. I have a feeling it's going to be a wheelie machine.

Still chipping away at the never ending To-Do list before my trailer gets delivered.

I fabbed an aluminum driveshaft loop that fits around my X-Pipe. It's a tight squeeze in there. Once this is bolted in, I can finally finish putting the seats in.

Stacking dimes, baby!

I also made myself a torque strap using some 3/8 heim joints. I fabbed the bracket out of some scrap L-channel. It should hold just fine. My attachment point will be the sway bar mounts in the tubular K-member

Nice work on the driveshaft loop, aluminum is not easy to weld, AND make look good. You did both. Can’t wait to hear how the car runs.

Work has been killing me, man...I logged 75hrs this week so far. Running on fumes.

I was able to cut and install the carpet and rear seat today during lunch. I can't emphasize enough how well the roll cage fits inside of this car. The rear seat slid right in perfectly. Super happy with it.

Finally was able to get the car to the track last Friday. Inclement weather + wildfires shut our local 1/8 mile down for most of June and July this year. It was a challenging season so I haven't been able to test.

My best time was a 7.42 while footbraking and blowing the tires off of it and letting out at 3/4 track. The car definitely has mid 6s in it if I can get it to hook. I need to monkey around with the Caltracs and the shock settings to help the weight transfer. The rear is separating too quickly and it's causing me to lose traction.

But the main thing is the car tracks straight, doesn't leak, and all systems are working. That was the goal for this 1st trip. Now I can start to dial it in.

Overall it was a great time and I met another guy with a sweet Belvedere for some Mopar vs Mopar action.

Better ETs are in my future. Just need more seat time and better weather.

Here's my other dilemma....The USCT leaf spring brackets are covering the upper hole on the Caltracs. I need access to this upper hole for tuning. My only options are to raise the overall ride height to access the hole, or I have to cut the bracket.

Been a busy winter in preparation for the racing season. I did end up cutting the leaf spring bracket to access the upper Caltracs eyelet hole. The bar angle is much more aggressive now. Hoping that helps with my traction issues.

I also switched up my fuel system in preparation for my Gen 3 swap. This Magnafuel works with both gas and E85. Sucker is a monster though. 14" end to end with the filter.

Air shifter setup. Still need to mount the bottle and wire everything.

Track opens at the end of April. Still need to install the spool and a few other things, but it's getting close to being ready.

It's been a LOOOOONG year, boys. With an insane work schedule + Family obligations, I only made it to the track 3 times this season. Just getting around to finally setting up the air shifter in Ol' Smoke. Dialed it in and I cannot wait to use it.

Tomorrow is the last day of racing before the track closes up for the Winter. My goal is to break into the 6.8xx area.

Had a GREAT T&T session at the track last night. Got to test the 2-Step/Transbrake and the Air Shifter. Managed a 6.975 @ 96.75 mph on No Prep. I was being extremely conservative with the low shift RPM of 5,800 RPM. The launch was set to 3,000 RPM.

She's got A LOT more in her when I turn it up next season. I believe she's got a 6.7XX in her with a prepped track and good air.

Pay no mind to the reaction time. Lol. Last night was all about making sure the 3 new systems worked together.

Overall, a very successful way to end the Season. I cannot wait for next year when I finally get to add the Nitrous :):p

Sounds fantastic! You can definitely tell it wants to run. Such a cool car! Great job!

I appreciate it. Thanks!

Yeah, it was just starting to pull hard when the system granny shifted it. I was going to make another run and let it eat, but then the EMTs had to leave. They had to close early.

It'll be fun to see how far I can take these Trick Flow heads. They've been great so far. I'm fairly confident I can get it in the low 6.70s with some weight reduction.

A buddy captured a photo of me and a young buck Dart owner. His had a big block in it. Built the car himself.

Love the lope, what are the cam specs? Saw in a previous post you upgraded but didn’t see specs. Car looks great!

Thanks man!

Here's a photo of the cam card. I'm still using 1.6 rockers.

My plan is run this top end/cam all of next season, and then switch over to a set of Bloomer heads and a solid roller cam.

I went back and read a little and noticed you mentioned two different engine upgrades in the cars future. Current engine with bloomer top end and then a G3 hemi. Have your plans changed for the car?

Kind of...

I've been "retired" from racing for about 20 years, so I'm still trying to shake the rust off. My plan is to progress my program in 3 stages over the course of several seasons:

Stage 1 (Training wheels): Keep the LA with the Trick Flow top end. See how far I can take it.

Stage 2 (Semi serious): Same LA short block with the BPR heads + SR cam. That should get me into the low 10s/high 9s.

Stage 3 (Hell Yeah, brother!): Gen 3 with either a Whipple or a large single turbo. This combo would probably take me to the limit of cage certification.

I'm trying to progress responsibly in the beginning. I need to learn how to fix simple problems with a slower motor before I jump into bigger problems with a faster motor. The ultimate goal is to get a Gen 3, but I want to master the chassis first and then add more power later.

That is way too damn logical and well thought out. I say give it all the beans now but that’s mostly because I want to spend your money and see a twin turbo gen 3 in the car.
Kidding aside it seems like a great plan and as you progress hopefully you can sell some old parts to pay for the new, or at least offset some of the cost of new.
