Anyone know what the numbers on 273 Comando heads mean? stamped/casted inside by the rockers 2465 315 1 on both heads and also o3265 on one and 03175 on the other.
having some weird head gasket issues on them. this is on my 1965 273 comando Barracuda
any help !!
Thanks in advance!!

Hi TerraBella,

2465315 is the correct casting number for all '64 & '65 273 heads. Note that the only difference between the Commando and regular 273 head is the valve springs. Here's what I have for production LA heads trough '86 or so:

and 03=march, 26th and 17th, 5=1965, when the heads were cast. also a 273 has a small bore, so u do not want to use a large gasket like an 8553pt fel pro. find something smaller. and the 3418915 was also on 70-71 2.02" / 1.60" 340

Good luck finding a smaller gasket. It's been documented here many times the small gasket is not manufactured by the large vendors anymore. You will either use the larger diameter gasket or pay big bucks to have one custom made by Cometic. Mopar makes a thin gasket which will help to keep your CR up.

THANK YOU great info keeps me from runnung in circles!!

VICTOR REINZ 611061500 is about the smallest bore listed for new head gaskets at 4.162 now. Most all others are generic 4.180

Here is a very popular one for 273. It is quite thin compressed.
Fel-Pro Performance Head Gaskets 1008 Mr Gasket 1121G is even thinner and smaller by .040
This is an old thread but worth reviving.

That sounds like the Go to gasket for a 273! Too bad they are sold in singles....a few didnt seal but who knows what they were trying to seal: rust, warpage, poor torque. I guess when you go to a graphite coated steel shim gasket, your bound to have a few issues. slather them up with copper coat and cinch em up...pray.

When it comes to the 273 ...
When ordering custom head gasket bore size...note the chamber are usually a hair bigger than the actuall 3.65 bore possibly because they were already in the works for the 318la predecessor... either way the chambers are already bigger than the bore by a notable amount and a gasket too close to the actual 3.65 bore size could hang into the chamber once installed and act like a step/stair case into the bore.

So measure the chamber width across the valve center, they are closer to 3.8" +inches

Let me see if I can find the photo's I took of the original shim gaskets on a 273 head.

This is a 66 #920 head and original steel shim 273 head gaskets.
