I have a 74 dart with a 3 on tree manual with a tired slant six. I am looking to swap to 318. I have been told that a bell housing from an a833 will bolt right onto my 3 speed manual. I have been told there was only one bellhousing made and it should bolt right on. Is this correct?

No. Somebody doesn't know their *** from a hole in the ground. There are several bellhousings. There is one that WILL bolt to your 3 speed, though. The three speed and four speed transmissions have a different bolt pattern where they bolt onto the bellhousing. Probably not gonna be real easy to find a dedicated V8 3 speed bellhousing. Chrysler made some with the dual bolt pattern for the three speed and four speed. Those will probably be more plentiful. But it needs to have eight mounting holes.....if it's NOT dedicated for the three speed. Then after all that hooha, you gotta make sure the center hole for the bearing retainer is the right size.

Here is a dedicated three speed bellhousing. Only four mounting holes. Notice the pattern. Pretty symetrical.

Here is a dual bolt pattern. See how assymetrical the 4 speed pattern is? The four speed pattern is the one the bolts are in.

Now THIS is the one you wanna stay away from. It's from the NP435 HD truck trans. SLAM different than a car. You don't need that POS piece of aluminum.

FIRST thing to do is measure the input bearing retainer diameter you have and let us know what it is. It will be either 5.125, 4.180, or 4.135 inches. Then we can help you find the right bellhousing.

And after you're done, you'll find that 903 transmission is a piece of junk. It probably won't last a week with a V8 in front of it. Do the conversion right and get an A833 4 speed or an A230 floor shift 3 speed.

yea i have the aluminum truck bellhousing. thanks for the pictures. If any one needs it send me a message. A833 is looking more like the route i will head. What is a fair price to expect to spend on a good unit. One year better to look for than others. Best junkyard car to look for? Going to miss the 3 on tree but yes it is a slow clunky trany.
Thanks everyone
