I was in the process of getting ready to take my 318 block, crank, rods into the machine shop to hot tank, resize rods, ground the crank but I found a 360 on craigslist for cheap..

The 360 is 40 over all torn apart.. so my plan is to get it to the machine shop get all new bearings, resize rods, hone and hot tank the block. My delima is the heads that came with the 360 look like crap and don't match so I don't want to touch them, I have a pair of 302 heads with 188-160 valves and I was going to gasket match/port them.

Should I use the 302 heads or sell them to get 308 heads..

The rest of the package includes a comp xe268 cam, holley 650dp, edel ld340, nitrous powershot kit, hooker headers, msd 6al, msd timing control box, 391sure grip, disc brakes..
The car is not a daily driver it is a streep strip..

Thanks in advance....

the 308s will work better than 302s on a 360 I really like the 308s with 2.02 intake valves and some bowl work some will argue but they work

It really depends on your cam and what kind of HP you are after. I think a 302 with some mild porting would be awesome on a street engine, but the 308 is a much better exhaust if you are going big on the cam.

302 heads are good for a warmed up 318, but they are just too small for a 360. Go with the 308 or any 340/360 head.

What price would you guys put on a pair of 302 heads with brand new 188-160 valves, ready to be bolted on? And what kind of price do the 308 heads go for?

I agree with the "run the 308s" people.
They are worth whatever someone gives you for them. IMO a few hundred which I'm sure is far less than what's in them - but that's the market. There are better heads available for a little more money so unless you find ignorance you won't get top $$. As far as gettign the 308s done to what I'd consider "right", anywhere from $700-$1200 depending on the shop labor and the parts used.

308s are prone to crack between the valves and there are more cracked ones than not so check carefully

302 heads on a 360 would lack upper rpm hp and basically become a cork.
Too lil port volume/cross section.
If they were full ported, then you may have something good .

In stock form you are comparring the 360 that flow roughly 215cfm w/1.88 int and 165cc vs 302 heads that flow roughly 170cfm w/1.78 int with 124cc port volume. Side note...unless the 302 heads you have were bowl blended/ported for those 1.88 valves...they might flow less than stock.

302 with the bigger valves and some bowl work will be great stop light heads. I put 360 heads on my .030 over 318 and the problem was it didn't leave very hard due to the open chanbers lowering the compression and making my cam too big. I ran 13.80's at Bakersfield in good weather and 14.00's in hot weather with 4.30's, 26" MT slicks @ 3250 lbs. with me in it. If you are really a stop light racer the 318 will work fine. When I decided to get serious, I built a 13:1 360 with lots of goodies. Ran 11.08 and 120. It was definitly NOT a street motor. 1.50 60' times are breathtaking. Still miss that.

Wow sounds like the 11 sec 360 would be fun..

I'm going to build the 360 and store the 318 just trying to pick out the best heads....

Edelbrock and rhs heads are to pricey or I would. I also resesrched earoheads and purchase the 915 heads

Just got my set of 308's done with new roller springs, I ported and polished them myself, had .030 taken off, all new guides seals everything for 795 bucks. Think they are going to work really nicely on my mild 360 La roller. Can't wait to get her fired off!
