I like the xe 256H 212 218 @50 447 454 lift 110/106
the tighter lsa will help low end

I like the 256 XE better than the 262 XE here, too. It’s on par with the Lunati voodoo 258/265 (213/220) in post number 11. Either of those grinds will really add some grunt from idle into the mid range. By virtue of the four speed, even a comp 218/.450 268 high energy would work decently, but would be close to the largest hydraulic cam I would use…

.510 lift is pretty aggressive for a 318 if otherwise stock.

Likely will need machine work on the spring seats.

Power band will be in the high RPM range.
I wouldn’t worry about the big lift on a comp cam… within 500 miles half the lobes will have .250 lift…

218@50 454 lift is in my 105k mile virgin 68 340 legit 9.99 to 1 manifolds stealth 650 dp 3.91
it rips for a stockish 340

If you don't want a cam/lifter failure, have your current lifters re-faced & buy the cam only, whatever brand.

Interesting idea.

What does that cost?

...but you keep the "old school" metal.

Plus, they’re properly hardened and get quality new internals. Oregon Cam Grinders offers it, but there are a handful of others. I’ve heard that Rhoades still makes good quality standard lifters, too.

I wouldn't go with 302, the slight gain of cr ain't worth time and money, I'd grab a set of replacement Magnum heads instead. Probably add 30-40 hp on the combo I posted above.

thats what im doing with my 85 roller cam 318! thay gotta lil bit tighter chamber thats better and gives a lil more compression than the 302s!

Hey peeps!

Anyone ever run one of these? On their 318?

Been offered one of these
COMP Cams 20-225-4 COMP Cams Xtreme Energy Camshafts | Summit Racing

Hopefully should wake it up a bit as it's the heads and cam that let it down now.

1970 318 V8 stock bottom end
Eddie performer intake
Eddie 650 thunder
Hooker headers
Dual cross pipe exhaust.
4 speed

Currently has standard 318 heads but when this cam goes in it will have something different

Maybe some 302 castings or the older 273 closed chamber heads to help bump compression. Ported to match. And maybe the 1.88 valves too.

What you reckon on cam choice? Car is NOT a daily, and only a very occasional strip car. mainly a street driven toy.

Thanks
I ran a set of 302 castings (1.88/1.60) with a [email protected] hydraulic cam. Had 10hg at idle! Heads can’t flow the bigger valves well. Small motor/small valve dia=port velocity. Look at lunati voodo cam ending in 701.

275deh is a good cam, Strong mith range.

Go for..
Stock 360 1.88 and flat top deck pistons.

Have that cam in a 360..
Performer intake,
Carb holley 600 vacuum,
Summit 1.5/8 headers.
Stock comp.

That cam going to have a little rough idle in a 318.

With valve "notch" pistons..I mean.

Was also thinking 273 heads for the same closed chambers and generous ports.

Might be a little easier to find here as well.

Will keep an eye out for one of those lunati cams. Also heard good things about Hughes whiplash

Whiplash cams are all about sound. Not much power over 2000 r's or so.

That is not really true it pumps up the low end with the tight lsa for low comp engines
This guy runs 13.20s street tires low comp 340 whiplash 3.91s
He ended in the 11s with a stroker
The whiplash works as intended

The 340 and 3.91's really help that combo.

Low end to mid range is what I'm after in a street car. I want that gut kick in the back more then I want a screaming 0-100mph car.

The thought of smashing my way through gears to 90mph in London with 1970 brakes makes me feel uneasy:lol:

the cam you listed is 4k to 7000 no low end in 318
4500 stall 4.30s or 4.56s a new heads is what you need for that cam
Heres the whiplash 3.91 cuda 12.96@104 mph
340 8.5 to 1 where are those 383 road runners fishermen
