318 or 360 - What to Build

-
4.10 sucks on the freeway.
3.31" stroke vs 3.58" stroke.
Now imagine you're buzzing down the road at 70 mph (i have no idea what that os in Syurpean units of measurement). You will ne sitting at about 4k.
Consider that stroke again.
Personally, id say fuckit and run the 360 anyways. It is something you will want to keep in mind.

With the 315/35r17 tire I’ll be reving at 3766rpm at 70mph.

If I up the diameter of tire to 305/45/17 I’ll be at 3460 rpm at 70mph

With 4.10 rear end and a 1:1 transmission 3rd gear

360 motor is a 1978 year stamped

Purple shaft cam is 1136 or 1138 stamped? However it must have been susceptible to humidity over the years and now has surface corrosion starting so I probably shouldn’t go that route.. young and dumb I guess.

Wipe it down with penetrating oil- if the 'rust' just wipes off you're good to go. Coat it in grease, wrap it in newspaper and bag it.
And I should mention, even if the cam is pitted you should save it- those DC/MP cams were generally made with good iron; it would most likely still be a good base to have a regrind done with.

Small cam 360 has gobs of bottom-end and midrange. Install good alloy heads and pump the pressure up, now you can rev it to the moon. With the new found torque, you can run 3.23s, for fuel economy.
Or better yet;
Find an old A833OD for next to nothing, and run the 4.10s for 65= about 2400.
First gear will be a great parade gear, and second comes to a perfect 6.85 for something around 220@050.
I have run this combo, and it was killer. At 195psi cylinder pressure, she was GREAT on fuel. I would still be running it these 25 years later, except the cam lost lobes in 2004. I've been waiting all these years for the 230@050 cam to die, so I can go back.

The amount of lift on the cam I have in front of me is approximately 0.51”/0.51”

Using a 1.5x rocker ratio?

My NOS Purple Shaft P4452992 had been sitting for a bit. I figured the better metal back then was worth trying to save it. My machinist polished it a bit for me and it survived the break in fine.

it's most likely the 508/292 (which you don't want none of)

they also made a 496/288 and just under that was the 484/284

As was "stock" the 78 360 was a dog. No more oomph than the 318 of the time would have had. Just sucked more gas under otherwise same conditions. Now if you truly BUILD it and not just "overhaul it" there is room to improve it. Lots.
And I don't mean 3/4 race cam type of thing.
At least the 318 will be flat top pistons and not dished like all the 360s got "snipped" with... So you "need" a built 360? A 318 will "cruise" just fine and 4.10s for the street makes zero sense unless you are building a track only car

Just for my knowledge, is there a particular reason that this is not a good cam for a 360?
apologies, i should've qualified that: on a stock-ish or warmed over 360 it's too much cam. you really need to have compression, stall (or a 4spd) and gears to make that thing sing.

Ahh I see. Well I will have to get new pistons and overall the heads on the 360 anyway, and I kinda figured I’d need a high stall TC. With the 4.10 gears.

To build a street machine what kind of build specs would I be looking at doing for compression, heads, intake carb, TC, ect.

Or even then am I chasing my tail trying to build the 360 around my purple cam?

I run the mopar 292 cam many here despise. Runs well. Your 4.10's will easily tolerate that cam. I say run it! Advancing cam degrees will help low end. I out my cam in 4° advanced and it helped.
