318 Stroker

-
I get building a stock stroke 318 but when stroking it's worth digging up a 360 block, your giving up 18 cid and breathing ability which is already a problem when building a big inch small block.

Some of us just have a soft spot for the 318.....grew up with them...
I'm very happy and proud to be a teener. ....I would love to stroke mine someday

Jeff

Here it comes again; all for .030 overbore, except I goofed on the baby sister

My question was purely rhetorical, but since I have a teener that would need to be overbored . . . . . I was just wondering. I agree a
360 block would be best but are non-existent in my neck of the woods. I found out after the fact that a friend of mine took a workable 360 block (as well as a couple of 400s and 1 440 to the scrapper - he needed basically gas money!
I've done the 4" stroke on my 318 with an over bore of fourth thousands I think it works out to a 392. I put rhs heads on it 4 speed an 410 gears with a small supercharger an decent sized cam an when I wear this one out I'll do another.

I'm one of the people who stand up for people who want to do 318 but once you stroke it it's not a 318 anymore.

Your building a $5000- $8000 adding a couple hundred for a 360 block shouldn't be a deal breaker.

Lol...true...and in reality my 318 is bored .020" over so it's really like a 321?

Maybe if your bore it out to 4.04 you'd have to stop calling it a 318 lol

I don't think your going to find a 318 to be bored out to a 4.04 LOL!

3.31 X 3.91 = 318
Stock
3.31 X 3.94 = 322.85 (.030)
Easy overbore
3.31 X 3.97 = 327.79 (.060)
Possible overbore, probably not advisable.
3.31 X 4.00 = 332.76 (.090)
Extremely doubtful overbore
Sonic check before any work is done.

Well a couple of years ago I was hell-bent on stroking my 318, but alas the cost was actually more expensive because of my small selection for Pistons that were more expensive. I went the cheaper route and bought a 360 block from my machine shop for a hundred and fifty bucks. And was still cheaper then getting 318 stroker Pistons and by far cubic inches ahead.

Don't knock the 3.91 x 3.58 combination
3.90 bore x 3.66 stroke has been base engine for the Corvette for a long time.
..built carefully should be perfect hp / torque balance for an A body and be very
fast and efficient everywhere, especially on the street!

So what I hear you saying is we ought to build our motors like Corvettes so we have better Motors? LOL

i stand corrected.
3.91 bore x 3.58 stroke is a poor combination

5.7L Hemi engine. It come with a bore of 3.92 and a stroke of 3.58.....347 cubic inches...

funny mopar did not go with a 3.31 stroke...

And did anyone take note of these few fun facts?
Poor man stroker?
Other modern HEMI bore and stroke combo's?
Anybody remember the 360 (3.58) stroke crank into a 340 block @ .030?
373 cubes, (372.61) like another engine we know.....????

Everybody used to poke me for not building up a 340, cuz you know; the 340 got the rep-- 360 got the rap.
So now I call my 367 a stroked 340, and suddenly it's oohs and ahhhs. Hey it's only stretching the truth a little;it does have a 4.04 bore. And it is Orange, top to bottom. It has 340 rods and a rebalanced340 flywheel. And a 340 timing chain, and all the covers were once on a 340.
But at hammer-time it's all 367

That is 100% true!
I knew a guy a good 25 years ago that said and did just that exact thing. Everybody ooohhh & ahhhhhed all over the place with a congrats and talk of how fast it is and what a wonderful job he did and how nice it was.

But I'm the fool for spending WAYYYY much more money (false!) on a turd 360!
Also false. I was faster for cheaper.

But all the kudos he got.
