360 Block Lifter Ticking

Trash in new lifters is a GUARANTEE these days, and I'd bet with removal and a disassemble and cleaning, your tick goes away. Probably trash from manufacturing that took some time and miles to work loose.
 
This ^^^^^ is the unfortunate truth these days. I know Comp used to put in the instructions that the new cam should be cleaned w/a stiff brush & kerosene, blown off & inspected........but an assembled product like lifters,.....?........just no excuse for it.
 
That was a PIA and a half. This lifter you could compress it with your finger a good 3/8" of an inch. The rest are still solid and I can't compress them with a punch pushing down. I don't see anything really wrong. The cage that holds the check ball on the bottom, maybe, was not pressed on straight. It fell apart in my hands as I was figuring out how it was held together. I cleaned it out, put some oil in it and it is now rock solid and does not compress.. Once the retainer clip flew across the garage I shut off the lights and opened a beer. I will try to find the clip tomorrow.

I am at a loss on what to do. Ask my buddy what lifters he used and get another one?

I saw the direction it went and I heard the jingling as it bounced on the floor. I should be able to find it. Would you reuse this one? I don't see anything wrong with it and it is not bleeding back now.

I think I would. Maybe reinstall it without the intake and spin the engine over a good bit and see if it stays pumped up. It would suck to get it all back together and it still tick. If it doesn't collapse after that, I'd call it fixed. It doesn't take much AT ALL for them to get blocked. Whatever it was may have fallen out and you may never see it.

Yep, toss it in & give it a go, it takes very little to cause it to fail to seat & bleed off....like RRR said, You may have cleared it w/o seeing the offending trash.
I always work w/o music/noise whenever possible, My ears were always a better way of tracking **** that took off on Me, and hearing things about to go wrong.
 
There could be some deformation in the lifter's valve seat that the eye cannot see. Might hold up ok with cold thick oil, but leaks with hot, thin oil. I would replace the lifter.
 
I have 4 lifters like that right now with my 500 stroker motor. I said F%&k it and ordered a solid cam, then bought some solid lifters off a member here and sent them to Ken at Oregon cam for resurfacing. This will be my next project. Hope your all set.
 
i took apart and cleaned all the garbage out of the roller lifters in the used 5.9 magnum i just put in my 66 Barracuda. Unbelievable the amount of funk in them. But when i put them pack together i put all internal snap rings from Ace hardware that fit in the groove of the lifter to replace the wire snap ring. I also shot a few across the garage when taking them apart. But it worked great, cost 12 bucks and they are much more solidly retained together now.

Do you recall what size you used? I couldn't find the right size last time I checked.

I wish i could, i literally took a lifter and my snap ring pliers to the hardware store and tried them till the fit tight. I have it written down in my project log, I'll try and find it when i get home. I had seen a cam company selling them for Mopar lifters in a set of 16, I think it was Crower, i didn't want to for them to get here, so i just went and found some, so i could push on with assembling the engine.

Thank you. If you can find it, that'd be awesome. Do you recall if they were a metric size? If I recall, they were smack in the middle of the two SAE sizes my hardware store had.
