Hey there just recently acquired a 72 Demon with a 360 magnum and A833. Had a neutral balance fly wheel and put a new 360 magnum weighted fly wheel on it and everything went back together fine. But now the starter grinds when attempting to start. Made two small spacers and still grinds hard trying to start. Dakota/ Mopar mini starter, anyone else run into this problem and if so how did you solve it? Spins fine and free otherwise. Thanks for the help! Trying to get it ready for Moparty here in a couple weeks!

Stupid questions,

1. Why was there a neutral balance flywheel on it and was the engine balanced internally if/when built that made it appropriate?

2. Is it grinding "evenly" or only part of the time?

Can you share a picture of the harmonic balancer and both sides of the old flywheel?

My guess is they couldnt find a weighted one for a magnum engine so they put a LA fly wheel in it which caused the vibration! I would consider it evenly grinding. Havent tried to run it yet. Looks like it would clear it running but didnt feel like gacking parts and before I did anything and ask some questions!

Ok Ill give that shot! If I space the starter much more out it wont sit in the pocket in the bell housing

Check your starter to see if it has a bushing in the top bolt hole. If it doesn't, the starter might be cockeyed towards the flywheel too much. The bottom hole of the starter will be a nice "barely fits" size on the stud. The stud goes on the bottom, so don't move it. Just loosen the starter bottom nut and the to bolt, then see if it moves back and forth on the top bolt. I don't know if you can buy one of those bushings if it is missing, but any machine shop should be able to make you one. I hope that fixes it.

I seem to recall that those mini starters had TWO, different tooth-count starter-drives available. Am I wrong?
Never heard that, but very well could be true. When I buy one to replace one of the original 20 pounders, I always ask for one to fit a 94 Dodge B200 van with a 5.2 automatic. Never had a problem yet. Supposedly, a starter from a 2003 Dodge 1500 with a 5.7 Hemi and straight drive transmission works too if you bore the treads out of the mount. One bolt threads into the starter casting on those engines. You have to ream those threads out to get a bolt thru the front and into the bellhousing on a 727/904 or 833 bell.
