4 speed shifter

Just got my 69 dart on the road, 340 4 speed. Sometimes the shifter goes into 2nd gear smooth with no issues other times it is like the linkage rod is too short? With the car in the air all the arms seem tight and ok.

Did you put a 1/4" pin through the shifter before adjusting the rod lengths ?
