...what mileage do you guys get with your 408"s?
small cam...350 + hp and 450 + torque street style build
i have always had warm 340's and when driven sensibly would
give 18 - 20 mpg

On my 408 stroker blue print engine in a b body 67 belvedere I get estimated 8-12 wth a 4 spd and 3.23 gears. 750 demon carb. I'm sure it could be better with it dialed in. Dustin

I will chime in for u. I am sorry it's not a 408 but mines pretty close its a 392 stroker an I don't get very good gas mileage. I think I get something like 8 miles to a gallon. An that's before I added forced air. It's got 3:55 gears an a 4 sped 750 dp an it's in a 68 dart. I knew I wouldn't get good gas mileage when I built it. Hope this helps...

With same gears the 408 probably get a few miles less depending on the build. If the 408 has less gear is possible to get the same lots of variables.

I'm getting right around 15 miles per gallon on the highway with my 408. Holley 750 vac/secondary & that's with 3.55s and a 28" tire.

I have no idea
3 days after installing the 408 I blew the 7 1/4 (whodathunk, right? )
so I installed a 8 3/4, which came with different gears, which means my speedo is off
not that it would matter, traction is non existent anyways

If I drive it to keep up with normal cars, my 408" 5.9 Magnum is getting in the mid teens around town and low 20's on the highway at 70 mph. 3.91 gears, 4 speed overdrive automatic with a 3000 stall lock-up converter, power steering, 275/60-15's on the back.

Hughes CNC Super Prep'd Eddy heads with some additional bowl and port work, deep ported Airgap with Big Gulp throttle body, 39 lbs Ford racing injectors, reflashed ECM, high quench 10.2 to 1 compression = (195 to 200 psi cranking compression), a smallish cam {IN .520" lift- 214* @ .050 }{ EX.540" lift- 218* @ .050} 110 lobe separation. Should be around 480 hp at the crank on 91 octane.

Car weighs 3700lbs without me in it, and gets a bit better highway mileage with the top and windows up.

About 3/4's of a mile per gallon .... about 11.7 seconds per 1/4 mile. :glasses7:

It's all in the tune up.

Ignition timing and carb set up are essential factors in getting good mileage.

3800lbs E body, 3.23s, 3sp auto trans with 2200 convertor, 422" 340-based engine. Ported factory iron heads, pump gas, hydraulic cam, 870 Holley Avenger carb - gets 17mpg in mixed driving. Makes about 450hp based on mph/weight. If your engine is that mild and tuned well, and the driveline is properly matched to you honest usage, you should be getting between 15-20+ in an A body. More with an OD trans of EFI.
