5.9 & a solid roller

-
get's cold where you live
I'd run 0w- 40 eurospec oil- the bmw long life ll or MB 229 spec
made from natural gas with high ep
Walmart has very reasonable like $23 5 quarts
Mobil1, castrol, Penzoil all the same stuff-- made in Belguim
get that start up oil flow

I'm running Schaeffer's, currently got 3 qts 20-50 mixed with 2 qts 10-30 for the summer. Next oil change I'll put thinner stuff in it for the winter, kinda nervous about running a 0W oil though. My oil pressure comes up quick on cold starts.

the 0w only matters at initial start up
you do not want molasses even 20-50 or 15-40 about what you have except where it never cools off at night

You think the 0W would be very beneficial compared to say a 10W-40? I'd like to keep using Schaeffers or Penn Grade but they don't have a 0W-40 or even 5W-40.

Would it be a waste of money to add a quart of Schaeffers to a gallon of the Euro-spec oil to get the moly and zinc or is the Euro-spec stuff already comparable in what it can do in a high-performance engine? I've been reading up on the moly additive in newer "specialty" oils and I really like what I've been seeing. I don't "need" the zinc since I have a roller cam but a little bit wouldn't hurt...??

Feel free to PM me (or I might send one to you) if you want to get really detailed about oil I don't want to hijack this thread anymore lol

OK but I'm going to be gone for a couple of weeks starting thurs am
the BMW- MBspec is designed for their sliding follower motors
the truly full synthetic has higher built in EP and anti scuff
40 is 40 when hot
you get more cold initial start up flow with the lower number W
in fact you will see cold 0w -40 flow about the same as HOT 40
whereas cold 20W or 10 W does not flow as well as Hot 40
your motor wants the viscosity of hot 30 and the ow-40 is at the lower end of the scale for a 40- almost a slightly thicker 30
btw never add usual supplements to a SN oil they require calcium based ep- regular supplements actually reduce EP
you might check redline and if you find anything let me know
I would not blend my own oil any more
most wear is at start up or when cold

Well, I’m sad to see this turn into a spitting match on oiling. Since this thread has nothing to do with type of oil, but just general Magnum block oiling and solid roller cams.

But you can always duke it out here instead; HP in oil?

I don't see how it's a "spitting match" but I PM'd Wyrmrider about it so the discussion won't continue here. Carry on...

So am I going to be able to throw a set of solid roller lifters in my Magnum block (yet to be procured) with no other changes? I got lost somewhere along the way.

Jeez. Seemed a simple question. Surprised you haven't had a solid answer in sixty posts. Would have thought someone tried by now and either succeeded or blew up. Either way good or bad, I really surprised there is no result to report.

JMO... Considering Magnum swaps in general are relatively new on this forum I'm not surprised. Look in the Racers Forum for instance, how many small-block Magnums are there compared to LAs? More people are just now starting to figure out LA cores are getting harder to come by and Magnums are excellent starting points for a performance build. 5 years ago it was barely even a discussion, seemed like the only mention of Magnums on FABO was putting Magnum heads on an LA block until about 2-3 years ago.

Toluene56 and I built up our LA-headed Magnums around the same time, he finished his a bit before mine but I wasn't too concerned about letting him get done first to see if it would work. I just tested things as much as possible while the engine was being put together so I could get an idea of how things would work once the engine is running, without it actually running. He got his running about when I got mine in the car and I had mine fired up 1-2 weeks later. AND... as far as I know his and my engines are the only Magnum short blocks with LA-based heads running external rocker oiling in existence!

@rumblefish360 you might have to be the guinea pig here lol

Yes, you will need to get a set of solid rollers that are tall enough for the mag block and if you're keeping the magnum heads. You will need a set of Solid roller that oil through pushrod.. like these. Hughes Engines. And you'll probably want to upgrade valve springs, rockers, pushrods all the normal stuff you would need to do with any engine.

That sounds like pretty positive "yes" then, at least with one model of lifter.

i have comp cams 8043-16.. but I honestly can 't remember if they oil through pushrod or not (i thought they did). But for me that doesn't matter since I have a modded LA head to use with my mag block.

Gzig5, has think he answered it as a yes a page earlier. Hey, @Toluene56, how high do you spin that mill?

As far as being the guinea pig, that’s a few years out. I have a couple fantastic LA builds (small strokers) coming up,. And I’m about halfway done with my 340 now. The one that I started a thread on and turned into a disaster, yeah that one. All fixed! KB 243@.030 installed.

I have the rev limiter set at 7000.. it gets there right quick and in a hurry... Pulls all the way. Afraid to spin it any higher lol.
