Hey all,

Im in the process of buying a set of 360 587 Heads and they appear to be 2.02" as standard. Would they have been 2.02" factory or have the been machined out? Can only see reference to 1.88" for this casting numbers.

Cheers.

is there a date code
and
doesn't matter you are going to check guides and valve job anyway stock valves or aftermarket?

My 2 pair are 1.88s. Never seen a pair stock with 2.02s.

Thats what I thought, they certainly look stock though? Or am I missing something.

Oh no those will never work. Sent them to me before you make a terrible mistake.
What does the bowl under the valve look like?

:D

I dont have them yet. Valves are still installed.

Do they look stock to you? I was going to get my 1.88" 587 Heads machined out to 2.02" but these have turned up for the same price as the machine costs.

.
If they are fresh and are not cracked don't need guides or seats you maybe money ahead to buy them

They've just been pulled from a running engine to install Eddie Heads. Im buying them unseen with the valves installed so cant really check anything out. I was just confunsed about 587's coming with 2.02" Valves.

Im in the UK by the way, so heads are a little thin on the ground and shipping from the US would obviously be expensive.

It's obvious from the head deck surface that those heads have been worked on. If I was in the market I would buy them rather than have my old set redone. Then I would sell my unfinished heads to help offset the cost.

Could you tell me what indicates that, please? Just for my own knowledge.

587's should be 1.88/ 1.60 valves.

Andy. Those 2.02 valve appear to be factory valves.
A Inexpensive & a good upgrade. However, the area under the valve, the bowl, should be opened up on a performance engine.

What a lot of people do is install the 2.02 in place of the 1.88 and do nothing under the valve. The valve seat is addressed to install the valves and that’s it. This leaves the initial opening and to a degree, the later valve lift area ability to flow more air curbed. There potential is cut short.

Should you seek more lift than the valve job is responsible for (somewhere in the .400-.500 lift area) then porting the bowl, the area just under the valve.

Thats exactly what I intend to do. Ive DIY ported a couple of sets of 587's now and feel quite comfortable with doing so. I'm getting these heads to save on machining costs (hopefully), plus a spare set wont hurt. :D Im installing Comp Cam Springs and Ferrea Stainless Valves anyway.

Cam will be the Comp Cams 274H, and the matching Lifters and BY901-16 springs.
