I'm taking the Slant 6 and tranny out of my 66 Dart and would like to know best how to proceed.

Thinking that I would want to remove the tranny first I unbolted most of the bolts connecting it to the engine. However there's one bolt on the upper right side that holds the tranny dipstick on that's very difficult to get to. I might be able to fight it and get it off but is it necessary to remove? It looks like it might be helping to connect the tranny to the engine.

The other route would be to put a couple of bolts back in, drop the car, roll it back partway out of the garage, jack it back up, remove the centerlink, and then hoist them both out. Do you remove the tranny crossmember before you unbolt the engine if you're doing this? It is necessary or helpful to remove the oil pan?

The third option would be dropping it out of the bottom but my jacks aren't tall enough for that.

If I was going to remove the centerlink, does it take any special tools?

thanks!

I've always pulled them as unit from up top - even left the hood on! When I install the slant and 4 speed into my wagon. it will be attached to the K and in from underneath.

I never needed to remove the center link... I do however put a floor jack under the tranny and take the pressure off the tranny cross member... Then I loosen/remove the engine motor mount bottom 1/2 nuts using 3/4 socket (one on each side)... Then I undo the bolts on the tranny mount then remove the four 1/2 bolts from the crossmember and remove it... Then place some padding (a piece of carpert etc. between oil pan and center link)... then lower jack to rest oil pan on center link... Then lift out.... Depending on what you are using to lift out engine... you either can leave hood on or you might need to remove hood... Uh, make sure you remove radiator FIRST... Suggest remove fan too...

And I have done this alone... (no Helper) though a helper is nice to guide engine in or out...

Thanks that's a detailed description, just what I needed.

My only question is, what do you mean by "undo the bolts on the tranny mount"….are those the bolts holding the tranny to the crossmember?

Yes to the last question.
Yes also to removing that dipstick retaining bolt.
Heres something else. I forget where the balance point of the /6 is on its mounts but if the engine doesnt balance on its mounts, then you need to immobilize it before you pull the bellhouse bolts out, or risk breaking off ears. Also, its best to keep the TC with the tranny, to prevent damage to the pump or TC hub.
If you remove the tranny and engine as a unit, you will need to put a plug in the tail of the tranny or you will have oil everywhere.Or you can drain the oil first.

FYI, TC =torque conveter, the thing between the engine and transmission. Just in case anyone wanted to know. MT

There are one to two bolts that hold the tranny mount to the cross member and TWO bolts that hold the mount to the tranny itself... Easy to get at, but need short extension for the mount to tranny bolts...

As for plugging the tail shaft (good idea always to do this) But I always drain all fluids before I begin an Engine/Tranny removal/pull...

See Pic... Mount on the left is the tranny mount... This one is photoed up side down... Not all of these have the TWO studs (with nuts) to the cross member.. some just have one...

Thanks guys....with as much trouble as that dipstick bolt is to get at, I'll probably just pull them at the same time. I'm picking up a 18" lift racing jack tomorrow so that will help with the jacking up and down process tremendously. My current jack is rather compact so everything has to be done in stages. Anyway, thanks!

Once you remove the tranny cross member and then "slowly" let the jack down that was under the tranny so the engine's oil pan is resting on the center link... It's easy to get at that dip stick bolt !!!
Don't totally remove the jack from under the tranny... And maybe keep the nuts on the motor mounts way loose, but not off the studs till your ready to lift it out... Always think "Safety" !!

Good Luck !!!

Thanks to Peyote for the motor and transmission. We made it back home safely. Great looking project you have.

Good to hear Mike, nice meeting you. And thanks to everyone's tips for removing it, it came out without a hitch!
