/6 engine removal with hood in place?

Has anyone been successful doing this. This would be engine and bellhousing only. Can remove bellhousing as well if need be. Am not a fan of drilling holes in hood for realignment. If someone successful, how close to boss on engine was boom? If I'm barking up the wrong tree, let me know. Jeff
 
I have had success by removing only the front hinge/hood bolt on each side. This allows the hood to "open" further while leaving it 'mostly' in place.

Outside Valve Cover to Prod. Exhaust Manifolds 17.3"

Bellhousing Face to:
  • Front of Block 27.7"
  • Center Line of Fan Belt 28.0"
  • Front of Fan 32.3"
HEIGHT
Bottom of Pan to:
  • Top of Prod. Air Cleaner 29.6"
  • Top of Carb. 26.5"
  • Top of Valve Cover 23.8"
Pan Rail to:
Top of Valve Cover 19.7"
 
Diffrent tactic. Take it out below... lift the car. There's some discussion on the technique on here.
Need to watch this on youtube. Think I would be lacking necessary equipment to do this. I understand the procedure. Thanks.

I just watched Vise Grip garage on Youtube, he pulled a 6 cyl out of his 73 Duster with the hood still on...check it out...Rich

You can do it on a 67 Barracuda. Jack up the front end to get more tilt. Make sure your cherrypicker has good lift. Use the shortest chain possible.
 
Yup it can be done.but it's much easier to pull with the hood out of the way/ and it lets alot more light in to help ya see what's going on...


I've never had to drill holes in the hood to realign.
When you take the bolts off there will be "witness marks" from the washer that is part of the hood bolt to go by for realignment.

i pulled the slant out of our 70 dart and installed the 360 all without removing the hood. no bell housing on either though.
 
It is much easier with the hood out of the way. I have pulled many engines by myself. Keep the link between the hoist and the engine as short as practical. Start lifting. If the hood gets in the way, that's when you remove the front bolt from each side of the hood (where it bolts to the hinges). This will let you pivot the hood open a little more without removing it (you may need to loosen the rear bolts slightly for the hood to move). With the engine out, pop the bolts back in and close the hood.
 
Because I can't R&R the hood by myself and have no one to help me.

I've often wondered what would happen if I called an Escort service in the middle of the night. When they showed up, I'd ask them to help me bleed the brakes, remove a hood, line up a engine mount, etc. I mean I'm paying by the hour and the fluids from an old A body can't be any worse than what they are used to dealing with, right?

If I had to pull the hood. Plan was to use sharpie to make my own witness marks but I got ya.
