Hello again, I've got another tough one for me. It's a TF904 trans in a 65 dodge dart. The trans *might* be original as the car was an original 273 / auto car but the engine was replaced with a 360 at some point in the past. The trans might have been replaced as well but it's definitely a 904. I've got a leak from the speedo cable where it goes into the trans. I bought the kit to replace the seals but can't seem to get the adapter out of the transmission. The cable itself will pull out of the adapter but I can't get in there to replace the oil seal or O-ring. I can't even see a retainer clip holding the adapter in the trans. Does the adapter just pop out with a flat-head screwdriver or is there actually a clip in there I just can't see? Visibility is limited due to the trans support.

Is it just me or that does not look like a 904 speedometer adapter?
This is early A stuff. It's different.

To @WhoDarted, it appears someone has glued it in with RTV. First though, unless you want a MESS, you need to do one of two things. Get a drain pan and drain the fluid by removing the pan, OR jack the rear of the car up HIGH and put it on jack stands. If you choose the latter, you're still going to lose some fluid, so get a pan and put it under the speedometer cable.

What I recommend is getting two regular screwdrivers, one on each side or the speedometer adapter and pry it out gently. With the bolt and bracket off, all that's holding it in is the o-ring and what appears to be RTV. Just pry back and forth with the two screwdrivers and it'll let go. But be prepared to lose some fluid.

Now would be a great time to do a fluid and filter change if it might need it. That way you won't get fluid out of the speedometer adapter hole, but it's totally up to you.

Ok, so it's likely an original 65 transmission. I knew that something changed in 1966 because all of the parts online mention they are for 1966 and up. So was this adapter never meant to be removed? I have the kit with the 2 rubber seals (outer O-Ring and inner seal) but it was for 1966 and up trans now I'm not sure they're going to fit this. I'm hesitant to try and remove it if I don't have the correct replacement parts. The leak is a real PITA at this point but fixing it might be a bag of worms....

I've found a full speedo-cable assembly and wonder if on the older trans it's supposed to be replaced completely rather than just the rubber seals in the adapter
