I'm new to this site so hope I am in the right forum. I bought a 68 340 Formula S notchback about 4 years ago and finally getting around to restoring it. The car looks real stock and the guy I bought it from said it is. The car is still up on this old link: http://americandreamcars.com/1968barracuda340forms011507.htm
Does anyone know if the flat black hood is possibly correct? Any chance the hood pins are factory? I am considering a side stripe and see some cars with a low double stripe and some with a curvy upper stripe like the early 'cudas. Anyone know what stripes were optional in 1968? The car has a console and the bent shifter. I would like a tach -was that a factory option and if so where was it? It does have the wrong buckets so I am looking to buy a couple of correct ones.

Thanks for any help.

Shane

Welcome to FABO. Hood should be body color not black, hood pins are not factory, body stripe should be low by rocker panel look at phoenix graphics for repos and a dash tach was available.

Welcome to the FABO family!!!

Every street intended Barracuda I have seen has had the hood painted body color. There isn't enough details in the picture to tell a lot.

Hey Shane beautiful car from what I can tell.I have an "S" as well. All the abv comments are correct. I have a factory tach for your car, or a factory clock if you are interested. Send me a pm. Oh ya post more pics of yer car!!

You can buy brand new tachs. I think Classic Industries and/or Year One sells them.

Most used tachs need to be sent out and rebuilt and refaced. Contact www.redlinegaugeworks.com for an estimate of rebuilding cost and factor that into buying a used one.

In my opinion repop tachs stick out like a sore thumb, dont look anything like an original one, and it being an electrical part, I doubt there is a warranty with it. I have looked into getting an upgraded electronic board installed and calibrated, and its around $100. As I said, just my opinion, but it is an "S" car.

Also factor in silkscreening a fresh face on the used faded tach to make it look new if comparing to new. IIRC, about an additional $100.

My point to the new owner is that there are options on the tach he might not realize. He can analyze them and make the decision that's right for him.

Wow. Great site. Got all my questions answered fast! I'll find some other photos I have before it went to the body shop. I had it plastic bead blasted to bare steel. It's in primer now and should be painted in a week or two and I'll post photos then. I need to look a fresh look at my gauges to see the condition. If they are okay but not stellar I will likely prefer an original tach to match the condition. Too bad the hood never came black. I like the look. It kind of makes the not so cool green look a little tougher.

Also, thanks for the links. I notice the options list either an accent stipe or sport stripes. I assume sport stripes are the two down low. Anybody know about the accent stripe?

I only recall seeing the lower stripes on the 1968 Barracuda and a maroon reflective tail panel insert stripe between the trunk moldings. 1969 had a stripe kit on the upper body and hood stripes as options. What package they might have been in or if they were seperate options I have no idea. Maybe someone else can chime in.

Looking at this I am going to guess the Accent stripe is the one on the trunk lid between the moldings.

Stripe between the tail light is part of the Spring Special option. There is a code for it. I comes with the 68 rocker gills and spears and some other stuff. Not available seperate.

There usually is an upper belt line pin stripe available. Check www.hamtramck-historical.com/ for all the dealer brocheres, color interior trim table, salesman pockets guides, etc, etc.

Thanks. Now I have a question... What is the code for the Spring Special option?

I'm not on my normal computer. But I have a picture of an original window sticker with Spring Special and I think it list some or all of the items included. One of the unique things for that option are that the plastic grille inserts slats are chrome edged. Just the front leading edge. I have a picture of one.

IIRC, I have a production breakdown number of Spring Special production for 1968 and it's got the code listed there too.

Now that you mention it, I recall seeing the 68's with the red insert tail stripe..cant remember if I have ever seen the chrome edging on the grille..I have one of Goviers books round here somewhere I will have to see if I can find the code.

I parted a 68 years ago that had the chrome edged grilles. They looked fantastic, chrome with black fins. Gave them to a friend, hope they got used :)

my friend bought one new in 1968. stock the hood is body color, no hood pins. the first year for the AVS carb. duel pipes, chrome pipe tips squire. i put two on a 1965 chrysler 300L. i think the rear end gear for a 4 speed was 3.55. i cant remember body strips, but old pics should show what you need.

Does you car have a fender tag? There are a couple sites out there that will help you understand exactly what your car had when it left the factory using this or somebody on here can help. Did you look under the back seat to see if the original broadcast sheet is there.

Yeah, post the number/letter combo on the fender tag and let the experts here provide you the details. Would love to see more info.
