Hello everybody I'm having trouble reassembling a steering column for a 68 Barracuda, what keeps the two upper die cast sections together? I can't see what the two square carriage type bolts do
Those two square headed bolts hold the steering column tube to the lower Cast portion. They are a little tricky to get right.
I can't even see where they would attach I took this thing apart to it's driving me crazy
Can I send you a pic?do you have the collar on the steering column yet?
Can you post it here. Can I send you a pic?
You need to download a factory service manual for 1968. Section 19-page 33 has pictures of what you need.
Put the collar on the column and index it counter clockwise, I believe. Put the square head nuts through the backside of the hub and the nuts just started on the front of the hub. Just a few threads. Install the hub on the collar with the opening for the turn signal wires on the bottom, lined up with the wire cover on the steering column. The hub and collar should fit together nicely and have a even distance between them, all the way around. Now while holding them together go back and forth tightening the 2 nuts evenly. Those 2 bolts/nuts pinch the collar and hub together. Here mine I just did on my '68.Can I send you a pic?
I don't think so, I believe as they are tightened, they pull up and pinch on the collar, locking the 2 together. When the hub goes over the collar the bolt heads slide down over the collar. That's why they need to be extremely loose.
Here is another pic I found of the back of the hub. When this goes over the collar, the collar slides between the hub bolts and the hub inner sleeve. The collar gets pinched in between there.
Do you stand it up straight while you're trying to get bolts to hook in the slots? In what position do you put it in as you're trying to index?
thanks everybody so much for the pictures in the help I think I got itI did it straight up and down
When you slide the collar down the square heads turn when you tighten them down and engage into those slots.
When you slide the collar down the square heads turn when you tighten them down and engage into those slots.
I'm not sure that's accurate. The nuts are captured and cannot spin. When you slide the collar down the square heads turn when you tighten them down and engage into those slots.
