A quick question here. When new, was the mesh of the outer tube perfectly flat, or slightly rippled?

Neal the one on my 1967 Barracuda is "slightly rippled". I believe the "mesh" was part of the collapsing steering wheel safety feature. In order to make sure it actually collapsed in an accident they "rippled" it.

they were rippled like mopardude said but more often than not the tubes are bent.i found a pipe that's the inside dia.and work it till it slides all the way on.just my 2 cents.
