Hey everyone Ive been changing the oil in my demon with a 69 340 for about 3 or 4 years now and she always seems to take about 5.5 qts of oil. But should only be 5 right?
There is a mark on the dipstick where it looks like someone notched it and it was even full to that mark when I got it back from my engine builder, so that's what I've always been filling it to. Also I'm running a Mobil one filter which is a little longer than the mopar filter but I don't think that affects oil capacity that much, and I believe I have a stock oil pan, any thoughts? I want to put the right amount in but also don't want it to not be enough.

Any recommendations for a replacement dipstick?

Thanks everyone

With a big filter PH8a type my stock 340 took 5 1/2 to get in in the full range between the lines

I had to mark the new one I got

Wouldn't worry too much about it. If the oil isn't foaming and you are putting 5.5 qt. it should be ok

If you are putting 5 qt in and when you change it it comes out close to 5 qt so you are not leaking or burning it you are ok

With the windage tray installed and the crank isn't dragging thru the oil it should be fine

Mine leaks so bad that even if I did over fill it it wouldn't last long....... LOL

I did get it to slow down last year when I noticed it was missing a oil pan bolt. Same stainless bolts will not stay tight. Need to pull them all, clean them and locktight them when reinstalling

With a stock engine and oil pan and a Fram 43, it should take 5 quarts.

If you use the Fram 8A, it should take 5 1/4 quarts. The 8A takes 1/4 quart more than the 43. The 43 is the proper replacement filter for the Mopar. The 8A is technically a Ford filter, but the base gasket and thread are the same as the 43, so they are interchangeable...

The 43 is better for exhaust clearance and may let you get away without the 90° adapter that seems to always leak after a while.... :banghead:

If I was running a 43 on the car, I would fill it with 5 quarts, start it up to prime the filter, then check the oil level and make a mark where it is (it should be to the fill line on the stock dipstick or equivalent). Then that is where you should have the oil level...

I buy the replacement dipstick and tube kits from mancini. They have ones that you can paint, or chrome....

Thanks everyone I might just leave it be for now. I might pick up a new dipstick just to see where it's at compared to the one I have.
I just don't want to overfill.
I haven't noticed any foaming, I pull the dipstick quite often just to make sure there is no oil contaminants present

Im currently running a Mobil one M1-301 not sure how it compares to the Fram as mentioned above but it's deff longer then a mopar filter
