Hi,

I swaped an engine from 73 to 69 Valiant.

I also bought a newer style voltage regulator

(http://www.forbbodiesonly.com/moparforum/attachment.php?attachmentid=132672&stc=1&d=1376351982)

And hooked it up, first we forgot to ground the box and bured it, the the altirnator had some problems.

Then we took the old altirnator from the original Slant 6 and but it in, also took the old voltage regulator that looked something like this:

It started charging but after some time (not sure if right away or later because the car was running on battery for 2 weeks) it started to charge at too high voltage (if the car rev's were higher). To the point where the battery was boiling.

After that I orderd a new style voltage regulator (the one I order at the fist time) and it doesn't charge anymore.

Do I have to use the old regulator with the old alternator ?

Kristjan.

It is not clear to me whether you are driving the 69 or the 73

1970 was the first year for the new style REGULATOR. To use that on a 69 car you must add one new wire and make minor changes to the wiring, AND you must have a 70 or later alternator, which has what is properly called an "isolated field." It has TWO insulated brush connections

===============================================

You can use a 1970 alternator with a 69 regulator by grounding either of the two brushes, then hook it up as it was originally.

Some info:

Single field alternator uses old style regulator or correct replacement. Dual terminal alternator uses the solid state type regulator with the funky plug and clip. Make sure your engine ground straps and BAT negative to chassis are installed and making good connection also.

True so far as factory. You can use the 70/ later alternator on the 69 /earlier by grounding one field.

Car is 69 engine is from a 73 road runner, alternator is from the original slant 6 (69).

So I can't use 70 up regulator and pre 70 alternator ?

Cannot tell from your photos. We need a good shot of the rear, showing the brushes..................... I mentioned this above in my earlier post..........

69/ earlier alternator only has ONE insulated field connection. The other brush is permanently grounded

70/ later has what is sometimes called "dual field" which is improper. "Isolated field" is the proper term. They have TWO insulated brush / field terminals. You can use these with a 69 regulator by grounding either brush (field) and hooking the VR wire to the remaining field connector

=========================================

I think the key to your problem is that you never got the VR properly hooked up. You PROBABLY had the alternator "full output" sometimes called "full field" and were running the car at fairly high voltage.

This photo is a 69 / earlier..............You can NOT use a 70 VR with this

This is an early 70 "isolated field

This came out around 72 or so, is known as a "squareback" and is a better alternator. You can use isolated field units with a 69 VR by grounding one of the two field terminals
