727 Front seal whats the deal?

What's the deal with the front transmission seal?
Some are Flanged and some are NOT? does it matter?

There's a step about 3/8" down where the seal goes. So even without a flange, you can't drive them in too far (or end up out of square).

Yup over the years I've used both. No problems.

I'm doing this right now. ...
My old seal had the flange, I had to beat the crap outta it to get it out.
New seal has no flange - no problem.

New bushing in pump housing installed. ..still need to peen it over.
