73 duster 4-speed reverse light switch info needed.

Been trying to get my reverse indicator light on dash and reverse lights to stay on in reverse...as soon as I let up on the shifter handle when I put it inreverse the go out...if i hold the handle they will stay on...I have adjusted the reverse rod different way doesn't seem to help...thoughts?

I would check to make sure the backup switch is tightened all the way, and if that doesn’t work try replacing the switch.

Unfortunately, if that doesn’t solve it the issue might be excess play in the reverse assembly, which you’re taking up by putting some extra force on the shifter.

Check to see if there might be an extra gasket under the BU switch that may have been left from a previous switch change. Otherwise, if a new switch doesn't solve the problem, you may need to remove the lever inside (the part that contacts the switch plunger) and weld a bit of extra metal in that area. I'd make sure all your shift linkage is in good order first.
