I have a 73 scamp with a 318 and want to get a edelbrock performer intake manifold. This is a weekend driver and just bought a 1406 carb to rebuild. The 73 has the egr on the stock manifold.Do i need the manifold with or without egr ?Is it exempt from age and what are the pros and cons of it.I live in Missouri THANKS

no you don't need the egr. egr stand for exhaust gas recycled.when smog came on strong in the early 70s they made the carb very lean to help control smog. the buy product from this is very high combustion heat which causes nox gas. a green house gas that al gore is so bitter about.this high combustion heat is also the reason the factories reduced the compression on are muscle car engines. buy mixing in a inert gas such as exhaust gas witch has very little oxygen due to combustion, it lowers combustion temp thus reducing nox.it worked out ok also because the temps of combustion from being so lean would also burn exhaust valves and so it helped here to. the good thing is at wide open throttle there simply not enough manifold vac to open the valve so it didn't effect the performance of the engine at least in wide open. and the carbs were set to richen up at wide open also.now days the fuel injection and computer control egr devices and catalytic converters have allowed compression to come back to some extent. bottom line its not needed for performance over all, the engine is more friendly without it at least in a driving way

EGR, a couple of vacuum valves mounted on the right side of cowl, and a bunch of vacuum lines under the hood of that 73 are all parts of emissions control and/or spark nock control and not required in most places. Those laws are subject to change though.
If you have the egr port and simply block it off, you have the option of reinstalling the valve if nesessary.
By the way, Fords new 5.0 is reported to be 10.5 to 1 compression ratio.

THAT is your answer. Contact your state authorities

Do you actually have periodic / random inspections? Roadside trap inspections?

If so, you need to contact them and see if older cars are exempt.

Now Federal law is a little different. It is flat illegal to modify or remove smog equipment Federally. BUT the Feds have never seemed to have any sort of enforcement for these laws/ regulations

('S part 'o the reason I bought a 67!!!)
