I have a 74 dart swinger.....purchased it a few months back...speedo doesnt work, odometer doesnt work, oil/ brake light doesnt work, Fuel gauge doesnt work, only one that barely works is the ampmeter..i pulled cluster out, PIA! Questions i have are.

1. Does speedo need power? odometer or does it just run off cable?
2. the black round plug with all wires labled A-L.....can anyone recommend what each letter represents?
3. on my fuse block what fuse number represents what fuses, wiring?

any help will be appreciated ..i dont mean to sound like an idiot this is just a little out of my relm...i am good at wiring just need some advice on trackin some of this stuff down..

thanks!!:violent1:

Hi
I'm having the same problem...
let me start by what I know. the fuel and temp guages along
with the parking brake light and the oil light are all powered
from the ignition run switch.
I was just out under the car checking the connection to the gas
tank, and no voltage...
that mulit pin connector I have not found a "pin out" yet
but you can make a reference on paper, the follow the diagram
and make your own. the parking light and oil light are the first two
to the right of the connecters keyway...
Some people on here talk about grounding the cluster
the cluster shouldl be grounded back through the connector.
as you know the cluster is plastic, so no grounding can occur
# 2 and 6 were mentioned on here as being the fuses for our
problem, I changed both and did not correct the problem.
But since we are both having the same problem I would say it
is something simple that we overlooked. Mine occured
after I removed the cluster to fix the dim light problem I was
having. There is a slight chance it is your voltage regulater
behind the cluster... metal box, push in type with 3 tabs.
these do go bad, in my case a made a electronic one months ago
and checked it the other day, 12v in 5v out...
Opps just hit me, although the gauges and the 2 lights come on
together with the ignition switch they are not the same circuit.
as the guages only use 5v and the bulbs use 12...
that is good to understand since then we can work back to a common
point...from which the 2 circuits seperate.
Hope you fix yours, and if you do please Post it.
and I'll be doing the same
Best

here are two diagrams to help you

You guys need to get yourselves A FACTORY SHOP MANUAL. Unfortunately the free ones for download are not that new. I can post some of this stuff out of a paper manual WHICH I PAID GOOD MONEY for

the pinout for the board harness connector is right in the shop manual. Once you get the cluster out, it's easy to follow the traces from there

Do not get to "believing" in the diagram posted. Those are incomplete and sometimes just plain incorrect. They are, however somewhat useful at times.

Additionally, there was a recent thread on this very thing

THIS is photos out of the 74 shop manual

PC board connector:

The problem with the newer diagrams is that they are not line drawn to the connector in the diagram

Here is part of the diagram showing the gauges

You have to work between the diagram, the index, and the connector layout pages to the rear of the diagrams. Look, example, and the lower right the fuel sender.

"CB9" in the circle is the wire end which fits the sender, and you can look that up in the index, and find a drawing of it in the connector layout.

G4-18DBL is the wire no. G4 an arbitrary no, 18 is the gauge and DBL is the (Dark BLue) color.

Follow up to circle "CB23" and if you look that up, that's the harness connector in the left kick panel

Follow on up to just below the gauge, and there is circled "CI-10" which means Connector, Interior, no 10

THAT IS the round PC board connector. With that wire number (G4-18DBL) go back up one post to the diagram of the connector, and find that wire number which is near top left near the key of the plug.

BACK TO the diagram. Find the voltage limiter and follow the heavy black line to the left again to "CI-10" G5-20DBL. This is your power coming in from the ignition switch, and once again, go to the connector diagram to find which pin.

You can see most of the rest of it layed out right there in the diagram
