8 3/4 gaskets question

So I am "freshening" up the 8.75 rear end, and when I took it apart, there are a total of 3 gaskets on each side? 2 metal and one soft gasket. Does that seem right or do you think that they person before had a leak and tried to fix it by adding a gasket? Anyone have an exploded diagram with part #s so I can be sure to add the correct gaskets back in the proper order?

BadSport, that's exactly what I found..Thanks for being so quick on the reply! Appreciate it! Trying to figure out if those two gaskets are both the metal variety, looks almost like they have a compression ring in them? Any idea?

There is one metal shim gasket. And one foam gasket that goes in between the backing plate to help keep dirt out.


You should also replace the axle seals too while you have it apart. When you install the new ones make sure to use some grease on the spring side of the seal, if there is a spring on them. It will help in keeping it in place when you seat the seal.

Also try and repack the bearings as best you can on the axles, I use a needle on a grease gun to get the grease in them. They ARE NOT lubed by the differential lube.

OK..I had ordered gaskets from Napa the other day and picked them up yesterday and all they had in the package was the metal gaskets..so now I need to track down the "foam" gasket".. the search continues...

Just buy a small foam sheet and make your own, easy to do. It's about an 1/8" to 3/16" thick and somewhat porous, kinda full of air bubbles. All it does is keep dirt out.

When I look at that diagram, there appears to be 2 gaskets on each side? Still trying to find a parts list for this. I want to make sure I get this back together right!

I do believe they consider the metal one a gasket. When I put mine together that's all that was there, the metal one and the foam one.

The metal one goes behind the retainer, the foam between backing plate and flange.

I've stayed away from Ebay for some time, got burned a few times and have been trying to buy direct when I can..but looks like this will have to be one of those times.. I already have the differntial 10 bolt gasket, and 2 metal shims/gaskets, but looks like I will have to go with the foam gasket from Ebay.. Thanks again for all your help! Made this relatively easy...

I'll have to take pictures tonight..I know there were 2 metal on each side, and some sort of thinner felpro type gasket also.. there wasn't a foam gasket on the backing plate also..so whoever did this before, did it totally wrong. I also can see on the diagram where they have 2 gaskets on the axle, one being the retainer and then one against the actual housing (see above from inside out gasket, oil seal, collar done cup gasket oil seal retainer shaft stud)
