I picked up a 64 Dart. The body was in great shape so i intended in doing a Chevy 350 initially but the seller told me he had the trans and engine and could take it with the car. short of the story is; his son removed the motor and trans in hopes of putting a 340 in it and never discussed it with pops. in turn, he sold it to me. my issue is; there is a 904 trans and I have never worked with the push-button stuff. I think i have the park break all squared away but the selector is giving me a real run for my money! it apperas that inside the trans, the "arm" that is suppose to have the retainer attached doesn't have the receiver/retainer to install the cable to.. but my question is: could it have fallen off and into the trans? where is the WORLD would i find one, and WHAT EXACTLY IS IT CALLED?.

IF it has simply fallen off due to a lack-luster removal, would i simply remove the trans pan and retrieve it?

Thanks for any help you can provide. I was hoping the reinstall wouldn't have taken this long and am growing a little anxious to have it complete...

Sorry that my first post includes DIRTY PICTURES:) lol

I looked for days to find some pictures of the assemblies but all i could find were in B/W illustrations that didnt really show the retainer/adapter in detail. the park break has a spring (not the cable retainer spring) that I assume is used to maintain a constant pressure on the latch and hook assemble, i couldnt find any info on exactly how that spring is installed to keep pressure. if anyone has any pics or knowledge of that, i would also be interested.

YIKES!

Would you have any pictures of the park lock cable junction? I see all the parts (besides needing to make a gasket). I see two springs (the lock/retainer spring and a ?tension? spring?) , the one closes to the end of the cable; I am not sure where it is suppose to be situated...

I can take a few shots of the park assembly with the pawl & lever this afternoon when I get to the shop.

The 2 springs you see in the valve body are held in position by the spring retainer bracket. The one in the foreground is the converter control valve spring & the one behind it is the pressure regulator valve spring.

Maybe you can drop the pan & post a shot of the valve body. Who knows, you maybe lucky & find the cable retainer laying in the pan.

Im sorry, I wasn't referring to the springs in your picture. I was referring to the two springs on MY park brake cable (this is not mine, its just a picture i found- but i have all the same parts). The spring that goes into the arm; is it bent over on the other side? mine may have been tweeked when removed.

I do plan to take the pan off today to see if it is in there but working 11p-7am always makes it hard to get time to do my own work...

If it isnt in there, I guess Ill have to try my hand at fabricating one... I dont think Ill be able to "order" that part! lol..

Ah. OK Karl I got you. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I thought you were referring to the 2 springs in the picture I posted.

Now I understand. The 2 springs on the retainer sleeve in your picture are as follows:-
The first one is the spring that holds the inner cable to the retainer sleeve. There is a slot cut into the sleeve where the end of the spring is meant to sit. As the cable is inserted, it locks behind the spring end.

The second spring that you see nearer the lever assembly is the over travel spring.
This spring will compress if park is selected in the event of the park pawl being adjacent to a tooth on the park gear. When the car rolls a couple of inches you can hear the sound of the pawl falling into a cut-out on the park gear.

I'll shoot a close-up of the cable retainer today & post it.
Cheers. Gaz

GAZ,
Your first picture in the last set was exactly what I needed for the park brake- its done and assembled! Thanks so much!. I needed to see the position of the spring in conjunction wiyh the park lever. I didnt have time to take the pan off today, my wife and I celebrates 17 years:). Those pictures were all very helpful, there is a very limited amount of them on the web. Im sure many others in the future will also find this link and benefit from them.

UPDATE: Pan off and the adapter was in there. my guess (because the pan fell off) is that they couldn't figure out how to remove the cable... but the didn't leave the nut... I'm guessing the nut just tightens all the way up onto the end of threads and allows the adapter to remain flexible? I'm headed to the auto parts store to get a 10-32 nylon lock nut and flat washer:), filter and gasket (had to order) to reassemble.

Nice to hear Karl. In a way I'm glad your cable retainer just fell off as opposed to someone removing it. It can't fall any further than the pan. Glad the Photos were a help & congrats on 17 years with your lady.
Have a gr8 one.
Cheers Gaz.

This thread is worth its weight in gold. I was unable to find how that spring, with tension, attaches to the dog in the clutch cable housing. short of finding another 62-65 A904 and taking apart, just to look and see how it's done, these photos answered my questions. perfect angles and I see that one end of the spring goes in the hole in the dog and the rest is wound around the adapter for the cable. Thanks so much.

Thanks so much for posting this photo of the way the spring mounts. Had me stuck for days.
