I know that the lever action 904 will fit perfectly behind the 360 in our old 64 Dart. We are going to install a 66 stock console shifter into the 64. That way, we'll have a lever shift trans. rather than a cable shift.

Question: The 727 is physicall larger at the tunnel, so I know the tunnel/cowl seam will need to be beaten flat. But are there any other fit issues? we're going to build a 8.75, so I know a new driveshaft will be needed, so I really don't care about the tailshaft length (if that is an issue)

thanks

904 is just smaller everywhere. 727 goes in but it is tight. personally i would just go with the 904.

I had the same questions about going to a 727 in my 69 barracuda. I have a 904 in it now that started making a noise when going into 2nd. (maybe just a band adjustment?) but I have a 727 sitting on the floor, Is the 727 a lot more $$ to build? I would assume just a normal rebuild on the 2 and the 727 should last behind a mild 360 longer than the 904... am I thinking wrong?

Although your question was pertaining to my comment, you should also be aware that the stock 64/65 buckets are wider than the 66 buckets. Once the 66 console is installed you might have problems adjusting the seats back and forth due to being so tight against the console. I did the same swap years ago in my 65 GT convert and for and aft seat adjustment was difficult at best. I am putting a buddy seat in my 65 Dart wagon but am using 66 Barracuda buckets to give me the adjustment room.

I have a set of 66 buckets. I was selling them with tracks and all for $100 - no takers. I'm glad now that I might have to use them in the 64!!!

Actually, I'm probably going with a set of sebring buckets that I have. About the size issue. I'm just looking to pinch a few pennies now. I have a fully rebuilt, single pin - 67 727 ready to install. My 904 is only a core. I'd have to get that rebuilt before can use it.

I agree. Go with the 904 if you can.

I couldn't get my 727 to fit without cutting the top of my tunnel out and welding in a sheet metal cap shaped on an english wheel. What a pain! I also "massaged" the pinch weld. The clearance problem was in the front part of the tunnel. I couldn't get it high enough to get the trans cross-member in place.

The trans pan is wider too. With TTi headers, there is hardly any room to do anything under there. It is a lot tighter with the frame rails 2 inches less on the early A's.
