Back in 95 you could buy cars for $500 to $1,000 still and another 340 engine to put in it for $500 you could get a 727 rebuilt for $200...this was my 71 demondemon and 71 duster...demon cost $1000 ....mini tubbed duster with 538 spool cost $800.......back in 89 I got a 72 demon 340 running for $800 and it had new paint and perfect interior....In 85 I got a 70 duster with 318 and 8.75 rear..no rust was driving but leaking water from freeze plug...no dents 3 on tree.....$50 no ****.....now I can't even afford a new set of seat covers....lmfao

Certainly has changed for sure.

My first duster 340 in 1987 was a roller with trans, had disc brakes. Paid $200 bucks!
Built a fairly street stout 360 with a crane cam for about 1400 bucks all in.
Got it painted for $300 bucks (I worked at a tire shop and got 2 discontinued mags worth 800 bucks for 100, then put new tires on them and traded those for the paint job. Widened the rear 14" wheels for 40 bucks each. Never checked the trans just dropped the valve body and did a shift kit for free which was published in a Mopar magazine. That car pulled good! Front seat re-upholstered was $300 which I thought was high…. lol. Now it’s 2 grand for the seat.

Shoooooooot..... in 1983, I was given a 74 Dart more door, and then a 71 Swinger.
In 1984, I picked up a 71 Barracuda 318 car for 1000. Driver quality paint and interior.
In 1987, I picked up a 71 Barracuda convertible 318, ps, pd, ac, manual top for 1200. Went big on a 1000 paint job and gave a kid $20 (yes 20 bucks)for the 340 out of his 70 Dart, because he needed dope money.
In 1990 I picked up a 69 Road Runer roller for 500 bucks.
In 1998, original owner gave me a 69 Fury convertible.

Yeah, the good old days. Gone forever.

I was burning through cars in the late 80s through mid 90s.
I bought 3 cars in one weekend for a total of $575 and 2 I could drive.
70 Coronet 500 2dr-$500
71 Barracuda - no drive train or rear, no grille. Orange with an orange interior. $50 bucks no title. And no ****.
70 Duster /6,auto. I come home from buying the other 2 and neighbor comes up and asks if Im interested in his car we wants to junk. $25 later I drive it to my house 2 doors up the street.

Yes, the '90's were about the low point in prices. Late '70's out of high school I bought my first '340 for $700.00. I loved that car, AAR 6 Pak, 3.91 posi, purple stripe, 10.5:1. What a blast. Would have installed W2 heads but they didn't match the 6 Pak intake. Kept if for 20 years when life kicked my ***.. Had 3 more since then, should have kept the '72 Demon but who knew. Still had the itch and bought the one I have now, paid 10x what I sold my white one for. It was the first one that made me feel like a kid again, and its quite a bit quicker. Only now I don't care if I get a ticket. Interestingly it was easier to pay for the one I have now than it was at $1.65 working at the Chevron station. Just spend the kids inheritance...
I probably look stupid driving it, grey hair and skinny, with my old lady sitting next to me. It is so visceral and gives the same shot of juice though, we both can recall the days of being immature and free. Back then I was offered a triple black hemi Cuda, broken by the side of the road in Petaluma. Wasn't interested in that gas guzzling heavy pig. Who knew.

Paid $200 for this 71 Barracuda factory 6 cyl . When gas went from .50 cents to a dollar I bought a complete 340 driveline from a 71 Demon with 49,000 miles for $50 complete from air cleaner to driveshaft!! Those were the days..........................

I bought this 74 Hang Ten Dart 360 Sport early 2000s from San Jose area of CA. Got it off ebay for around $6500. It had auto trans, a/c, headers, and 8¾ rear, 15" wheels on rear. I collected various parts for it for a while but a 74 wasn't really what I wanted. I wanted to end up with a non a/c, no frills (except I wanted sunroof and fold down rear seat), 4 speed hot rod. This car seemed like more work than I wanted. Too many repairs and too many changes. There wasn't a straight panel on it. The hood had a kink in the middle, the trunk lid and taillight panel were dented near the lock. The roof was dented behind the sunroof, and even the sunroof panel was dented.
I ended up putting it back on ebay and sold it for a loss. Now I wish I had kept it. It was in much better condition than the 73 I have now.

The pictures look better than it did in person.

Bought my 69 GTS 383 4-speed in 1978 for $740 which I still have, this picture is from 1981 after I wrecked it and was getting it back together. In 1980 I bought this 70 Duster 340 4-speed for $1000, sold it to a friend and never saw it again, got the woman in 1981 and still have her too...

i don't know what makes this picture so perfect: the lakes, that shirt or the cragars with the painted drums hiding out and knowing that you've got some skyjackers out back.

love all of it!

August 28, 1977.

I bought this...My first car for 700.00

Got my drivers license on it.

Still have it today.

Those days are long gone. What I have now I'm never selling. Driving the nuts off of them. Too old to start over.

This is what I remember... The clothes, the stance, the wheels, the traction bars, all of it.

We sure had it good fellas and didn't even realize it....well I looked around at the swap meet this weekend and the parts are thru the roof and the cars are astronomically priced....just saying

1968 Fastback in 2001 for $3,400. Ran great cast crank 340 from 73 duster...sold 2007 for $7500....then they went thru the roof

70 Roadrunner, 383 auto , bench seat. Disc brakes, 323 suregrip, 3 speaker dash. All new seats and headliner. Originally B5. Lady i bought it from hated blue and had it painted Tor-Red. Oh, and Air Grabber hood with turnsignals.
Paid $2500 for it in 94. This is the one I never should have sold it. Only thing I did was put Cragars on it.
The 72 Duster was a 318, ac car. Got an 8 3/4 from a buddy for 150 bucks. Put cragars on it and drove it. I had a $2000 '87 Z24 Cavalier that I traded even up for this.

You'd cry if I told you what I paid for my Superbird in 1990, but it still had us eating macaroni for months...
I bought a Superbird in Myrtle Beach, SC for $3000 in 1985. I was at the beach on vacation, saw the car sitting in a Gulf station on Kings Hwy. I drove it home, restored it and sold it in 1988 to build my house. I sold it in Hemmings for $14K and thought I'd made a fortune! :realcrazy:
