Hey all!

I need some help with my alternator belt placement.

I’ve got a 1968 Plymouth Valiant and the alternator I have on it is a two pulley. My question is, does the alternator belt need to go on the inner pulley that is closest to the alternator or does it go on the outer pulley?

With that, my next question is about the other end that the belt needs to loop onto. There are two pulleys that are located underneath the front part of the engine; one small and one large. Would it go on the smaller pulley or the larger one?

The reason for this confusion is because it is currently on the inner pulley of the alternator and the smaller wheel, but I was watching a video today of someone with a 70’s Dart and I noticed their belt was on the outer pulley….

I’ve been having some charging issues with my valiant. I’ve already changed the battery and even put a new alternator on, I also even purchased a new voltage regulator I am going to pick up today, because even with changing out the alternator and getting a new battery, I’m not getting enough power. (Car read 12.7 when we first installed new alternator and new battery, then showed 12.44 volts with car running, 12.48 when revved, and 12.45 when turned off).

I’m wondering if it isn’t the voltage regulator… if it is actually the alternator belt being on the wrong pulleys that is causing all of the charging issues.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks guys. (I tried to attach photo of alternator belt on the alternator pulley, but it is too large.)

What engine is this and do you have AC or power steering?

Ideally you want it on the inner groove of the alternator pulley but your charging problem here doesn't have anything to do with which groove you're on.

The other two pulleys you're referring to are the crank pulley and the water pump pulley. The crank pulley is the lowest one and the water pump pulley is above it. A simple belt alignment would be one belt that wraps around all 3 pulleys like the pic below. Is this how yours is set up with the only difference being your belt is on the outer groove of your alternator pulley?

There are a couple different types of brackets that are used, one of which would get you on the inner groove, but like I said that's not really going to help you with your problem here. It'll probably be a little healthier for the alternator though since the load will be closer to the body of the alternator. I think of it sort of like how it's much easier to carry something when it's close to your body than away from your body.

What I’m assuming is the crank pulley is much lower than this one and the belt is on the inner groove (closest one to the alternator). It is really annoying that I’m unable to upload a photo….

Without photos this thread is useless

Okay I used a website to resize a photo to upload here and it worked.

I sent you a PM on how to upload photos.

I guess you know how to upload photos so never mind

right off you are missing a bracket. From there it looks like you have the Alt belt in the correct set of pullies, but without a better photo from the side looking down its hard to know. MYMOPAR.COM free download of your cars Factory Service Manual. If you don't have it get it. The belt routing is in there.

Also no power steering and no AC. I have a 4.5L 273 engine with a 4 barrel carb.

Wow I didn’t realize there was no bracket. Yikes. Is there a way I can purchase it? I’m trying to look up alternator bracket in oreilly and can’t seem to find it.

classic ind and other restoration shops will have it. A wanted ad here too.

BUT....

there is more to it than that.

if the engine is a 69 and older it takes one type of bracket, if 70 and newer a different. The crank, water pump and alternator pulleys need to be for the same setup if all your pulleys are from an AC PS setup they will not line up correctly. We really need more photos of what you have now.

You must change the pulley. Neither the inner or outer is correct. The single groove pulley rides in the center of the two and is larger in diameter. You could shim the alternator but the diameter will still be wrong. Good luck

I agree with OMM. In my limited experience with them, those machined double pulleys don't seem be aligned right. There's a whole thread I started called "alternator show in tell"
Got an old original single sheave pulley from OMM. :)
