Another Mopar Off My Bucket List - Barracuda Fastback

-
Anyone unfamiliar with the show will not understand.

Lol,man oh man if ever I meet anyone as bent as Oscar...Well lets just say I hope nobody is as dumb as that.Hank is a younger version of him. If these guys are based on real praerie folk in Brents life, Canada's gene pool is in trouble.

Thanks by the way. Your a hoot yourself! This has been a great way to wake up....:coffee2:

I loved it when he stole the garden gnomes. With each passing day I think I come a step closer to becoming more like Oscar myself.

For those of you that haven't been exposed to CORNER GAS yet here's more.

I fired up the propane garage heater this morning and after 6 hours the temperature shows around 60'. My thermometer is mounted 6 foot off the floor. I know the floor temperature can't be much above freezing. I'm gonna try to get some work done today.

I bit the bullet and ordered another helmet that I will keep with the Duster. I'll tinker around with graphics and lettering.

While I was at it I ordered a new oil pressure gauge and water temperature gauge from JEGS. They're not high tech but I like the way they look with the light shining through the faces. The voltage gauge I'd bought from them before looks a lot nicer than the Auto Meter gauges that are with it.

I couldn't get the camera to take an accurate picture of what the gauges look like in the car. In the photo it looks like there's a lot of glare from the gauge but in reality the JEGS gauge has perfect illumination while the others seem dim.

FedEx dropped a package off today.

My son decided to go ahead and purchase one of those COOL VIEW thermostat housings for his Charger.

I'm tempted to rob it for the Barracuda and order him another one.

I wouldn't tell him I took it. Just tell him you don't know what happened, it wasn't in the box. lol *deer in the headlights look* :D

Nah, I couldn't do that. He's likely going to be the one to pick which nursing home I go to some day. - And nurse Ratched may still be around.

After reminiscing about CORNER GAS I began thinking about another show that I used to watch. It aired on Comedy Central for one season and was called AMERICAN BODY SHOP.

It's back. After all the delays working on other projects I've finally got the '70 Roadrunner back in the garage. I'm planning on disabling the FAST ignition controls and switching the duties back to the MSD.

Before I do that I'll have to go through all the wiring to make sure that there aren't any other problems lurking.

It's been quite awhile since the bird was in the garage. It seems like it's 10 foot longer than the Duster. There's not much room in front (or behind) it.

My you are a busy one! I like the RR,those are cool...well then again, all mopars are cool!

Hopefully I too can soon start work on my Dart (sheetmetal on the way). Im kinda jealous just watching...

I'll take the long RR off your hands!!!!

I may love the '70 Roadrunners but I'm anxious to get it off my hands and back to my son. We agreed that I need to use it as my daily driver for awhile so that I can be sure that it's bug free before he takes it back to Iowa.

The interior and drive train are fresh. He still wants to find an air grabber hood for it before it gets re-painted. I think he'll stick with the original orange but he'll probably switch out the wheels to some form of 5 spoke mags. For now he just wants it debugged so he can drive it while he focuses on the Charger.

It'll be nice to be back behind the wheel on it. I may like my A-bodies but my first (car) love was my old '70 Roadrunner.

Don't be too jealous. - After all, the '68 R/T, '70 Roadrunner, and 2010 Challenger aren't mine. My son has good taste.

We spent a lot of time searching online and with FAST's tech support for answers when the Roadrunner began acting up. Part of the problem that he purchased the system shortly after they first became available and no one had experience with them.

We thought we'd gotten everything working great more than once, only to have glitches show up within a few weeks afterwards. The FAST fuel injection is designed to be self learning and starts out clunky each time the system gets reset. Gradually acceleration improves and smooths out the more it's driven. We had pretty good luck with it until we switched the timing control over to the FAST computer. That's when the headaches began.

I'm not certain exactly which configuration we'll be using eventually. The fuel injection seemed to have given us a major horsepower boost so I assume we won't go back to a carburetor. The timing control is another matter.

The logistics of getting the Roadrunner into the garage were harder than what I'd anticipated. Even though I'd towed it onto the driveway some time ago I hadn't checked out why it wouldn't start.

Moving the Ford pickup and Teresa's Sebring out of the way was no problem. The Duster fired right up and I drove it out onto the street. The Roadrunner wasn't so easy to move.

I decided to use the riding mower to pull it inside. So far everything had been going OK. That's when I hit my first obstacle. The battery terminals on the mower corroded and I had to clean them and then jump start it. - No problem.

As I left it run for a few minutes to allow it's battery to charge it died. I ran out of gas. Because my 5 gallon can was also empty I had to run to the gas station to buy fuel. Returning home, I filled the mower back up, restarted it and left it warm up again. - No problem.

There was still some snow packed on the driveway. It wasn't a lot but it was enough to make it hard to get the Roadrunner to roll over and enough to give the mower traction issues. I scooped as much off the drive as I could get off. - No problem.

Using one of my longer ratchet straps I hooked the mower to the K-frame. With Teresa on the mower and me pushing it still took about a half hour to get the car lined up with the garage stall. There wasn't enough room to pull the car inside and still be able to get the mower back out. I thought I'd be able to push the car in after it was square with the opening to the garage. - Problem.

I couldn't get it to budge. It's slightly uphill and there are a few low spots in the driveway. I didn't have the oomph to make it move. Teresa tried to help push but we still had no luck. I'm not sure if it would have worked if I'd have called up one of my buddies for a hand. It might have taken a few more.

So I went to the trailer and grabbed every ratchet strap and tow strap I have. After stringing them all together I extended the line of them out the back (walk-in) door and across the lawn to our back lot. There's a good 6 inches of snow cover back there so I knew the mower wouldn't be able to make the pull. The Ford pickup is 2 wheel drive. It was pretty iffy whether or not it could do it. Tugging the straps a few inches at a time I did get the car inside. It took a long time but it's in. - No problem.

The first thing that needed attention was the battery. I knew it was dead so I put a 3 amp charge on it and left it sit for 6 hours until the booster showed it was fully charged.

The second thing that needed attention was something I noticed when I hooked up the battery charger. There was a wire loose on one of those cheap battery terminals. I tightened it back up. Within a minute later the car was running. I think I've got a spare molded positive battery cable in the tool box. I need to change it. It could have been causing the problems with the FAST ignition controller. We'll see.

It's supposed to get up to 20' here tomorrow. I'll give it a test drive before I try tearing into anything. Right now it's after 11:00pm and I don't want to risk getting stranded at night. If the car behaves I'll continue to drive it until it acts up. No sense in fixing something that isn't broken. If it does show problems I'll have to start troubleshooting. It'd be great if it turns out that this was the only problem.

Jeez, what a day you had....it kinda sounds like some of my worse days alright. Lol I'm no longer jealous haha.

Those FAST controllers need a lot of juice to run the system . What kind of alternator is in the car,and how many amps? Not trying to complicate things for you, just a thought. Might be you have already fixed things with finding that loose wire.

We're running a chrome 140 amp Powermaster alternator.
I talked with my son on the phone tonight and he swears there's got to be another problem besides the battery cable. He's probably right but I'm not sure yet.

I've had a few different vehicles with weird ,untraceable electrical issues. In all cases I simply replaced the ground wire. Problem fixed.

The weirdest one ws a first gen Chrysler minivan that stalled only on right hand turns...Yup ground cable again.

It's been awhile since I last worked on this injection setup. I do know that one of our big concerns was proper grounding. I'm not sure whether or not I ever got a good grasp of how to do it right on this FAST setup. I know that we've got very good ground connections but I'm not sure if we've got our grounds in the correct locations. FAST wants their connections to be isolated from the rest of the car's electrical system as much as possible. But I've read that multiple grounding points can have an antenna effect that will draw interference.

Well I just got back from a 20 minute test drive with the Roadrunner. There was a slight stumble about a block away from the house but otherwise the car ran fine. 60 pounds oil pressure, the gauge shows that the alternator is charging, but I might have a new problem.

The windows steamed up as I was driving and the temp gauge never rose above 160'. I suspected a bad heater core but the heater is blowing hot and I don't smell antifreeze. There's no sign of moisture on the floor. We're running a large aluminum Champion radiator with no shroud. If I recall correctly we've got a 180' thermostat. The upper radiator hose feels very firm as though there's a lot of pressure. I tapped on the thermostat housing but it didn't make any difference. I'm not sure if I should be concerned yet.

I let the car sit idling in the driveway for the past 10 minutes and the gauge hasn't risen any but the windows continue to fog. I'm about to head out on another road test.
