Another Mopar Off My Bucket List - Barracuda Fastback

-
I heard back from Mike at MRL today. It's time for me to send him my distributor, wires, etc... He sent a few pictures of the engine build. I had left the decisions regarding component selection up to him so I don't yet have all of the specs on parts. I simply let him know that I wanted him to squeeze a bunch of power from a 408 that will run on pump gas and be ultra-reliable. I figured that I was better off trusting his experience than my sketchy knowledge. (you may have noticed the early style water pump installed that I'd requested)

It's time to pull the 318.

NOTE TO SELF:

Make certain that the bucket I'm draining antifreeze into has a bottom!

I'm still trying to get the Duster ready to go racing this year while I'm working on the Barracuda. After reading the NHRA rulebook it looks like I've got a lot to do. Apparently the car is too fast to run the roll bar and it will need a full cage. The fire suit won't be legal for that speed either. If I read correctly, I'll have to use a 5 layer suit. My belts are out of date and the helmet doesn't have a prayer of being OK'd.

Man i love this car!!!

Thanks zombie. I keep tinkering with it trying to get things right. It's sort of like having a full scale model car project. The 318 ran pretty good (for a 318) but I'm really looking forward to getting that stroker in it. Now I'm considering changing the mono-color Cuda decal in the tail stripe to full color. I think it's because I was re-inspired by the pictures of that Hemi Cuda that was for sale on eBay. It made me feel that I'd tamed things down too far. I would have loved to have had that full blown lace paint scheme!

I printed out a few window decals for fstfish66. They are a reversed image so that they can be applied to the inside of the windows. While I was at it I made some for my 1/16 scale die cast car that I'd like to match to my Barracuda.

Lots of good progress, when will the engine be delivered?

I don't have a delivery date for the new motor yet. I held Mike up a bit as he had to wait for me to get my old distributor and valve covers shipped to him to re-use. He said it'll be on the dyno next week. Today I finally got around to fabbing up my subframe connectors and got them welded on.

Can't wait to see, what he cooked up for you.

Would like to see some pics of the subframe connector work. I do feel a little responsible for putting you up to that.....

While the hood is off the car it's a good time to give it some attention. The bottom side had never been finished nicely. It had the rough fiberglass texture to it still. After examining it closely I could see that I wouldn't be able to get by with just sanding it smooth. There were too many areas that were porous. So, I started by setting up a pair of saw horses that I padded with towels. After putting the hood upside down on my supports, I sanded the paint back off of the areas that needed help. Once I had all the high spots knocked down, I mixed up 16 ounces of fiberglass resin to level out the low spots. After a few hours of setup time I took the DA to it again.

My plan was to paint the bottom side black again. But I want to doll it up a bit more
. I ordered a roll of adhesive vinyl that has a 'chrome' finish to it. I plan on putting it in the recessed areas of the hood. If it doesn't look OK, I'll take it back off. I suppose it'll take a week or so for the vinyl to arrive.

I vote this color style :thumrigh:

After smoothing the bottom side of the hood, I used a roll of red rosin paper to make my templates for the vinyl that I'll be applying later. The areas that you see the paper on now are the areas I'm planning on covering.

I realize that this will be far from a stock appearance, but that ship has sailed a long time ago. I hope it looks alright when done.
