Any one use tire valve extensions?

-
We used to go through boxes of the plastic kind back in the day. What's your question?

I don't want any problems with air leaks. Do these extensions need to trap the air all the time or just upon refilling the tire?

They only pass air through, the core remains in the original stem. I doubt you can let air out through the extensions, plastic ones -that is.
Dont care for them. My preference is metal valve caps, with the hex. Can snug them beyond what fingers can remove. People still take valve caps.

Plastic ones are fine or do it right and install new longer stems.

After we cracked a rubber valve stem while washing the car causing a flat ( tires and stems about 10 years old ), I purchased full metal valve stems. I'll add that the rubber valve stems were through holes in OEM hubcaps yet did move enough to crack at its base. Surely easier to crack where fully exposed, as in a sport wheel. Anyway... It wont happen again. My new opinion is every pneumatic wheel tire assembly should have a metal valve stem.
I suppose I would install plastic extensions if/where needed.
