I am at the point where I need to find a good builder for my transmission that is going to go behind my TT Engine. I am going with a 727.

I just got of the phone with Keith at http://www.727specialist.com/ , he was willing to share a bunch of information with me about how he would build a trans for my application. Has anyone used this shop for their transmission needs?

I also called and talked to Dave at Pro Trans. He did not share any information with me and is a very secretive business man. I asked him how much it would be to build a trans and he would NOT answer my questions at all. He wants me to drop it off as an open ticket and he will let me know later how much it is. Is that his standard business practice?, it kinda threw me for a loop.........

Man I'd be learly of letting some unknown have an open ticket/bill on your trans. Ya never know how high that bill will climb andd what you will end up with.

Give john at cope racing trans a call. I have got some stuff from him and he is a great to deal with.

He is a well known builder here on the West Coast. I am just not use to not knowing how much it is going to cost me. Kinda weird.

I just bought all things possible from cope and had dads friend who worked on Transmissions for 15 years. I like it, just needs to be adjusted, I also got the full manual reverse valve body.

There are several good builders to deal with.I am fortunate to have a builder that has become a good friend.I prefer dealing face to face VS shipping out to a distant shop. There are many special parts or more severe duty parts required for the trans to live in an extreame application. My junk with only 10 lbs of boost has more than 850 ft lbs of torque @ 4900 RPM.That would test the entire drivetrain:burnout:

So what engine are you boosting? & Who is your builder?

Go to Pro Trans. He makes a lot of the trick parts that the other guys use.

He's secretive because he builds high competition trick race transmissions. Troy (Westoaks MP) knows them very well and built many trans' for Troy and his race customers.

I think he's not the best sales guy. But some top work and he backs up his work.

I have heard nothing but good things about Pro Trans & I believe you when you say he is not the best sales guy. They do have a really good reputation for sure. Maybe I need to make the 3 hour drive out an meet him in person.

I pm'd Troy this thread.

There may be a better time to call them. Or maybe better to talk to one of the brothers or son. Hopefully Troy will respond with some guidence.

I have used Keith at 727specialist a number of times. Great work and the trannys have always been top notch. Also a very good guy to talk with.

I've met and talked to Keith at MMW. He seems very knowlegable.

Well I can see that you are making some serious power!! I might be changing my mind on the trans and possibly going with a 2004R Built by Art Carr. The price is similar to an all out 727 Build and you get an OD too. He says they will live to 1000+ HP but I need to get him on the phone and pick his brain. I know a 727 will live with that kind of power and would hate to make this swap to the 200R4 and have it take a crap on me. Decisions.......

Going back to your original question.I bought a street/strip 727 from 727 specialist for my mild 340 and am very pleased with it.Thanks Kevin.

Kevin sounds like a good guy when I was talking on the phone with him. He was more than willing to explain everything to me in detail, most trans guys I have talked to will not do that.

I've bought from him. I have not installed the tranny yet, so I don't know how well he built it. Went with a basic build for the street with quality internals. Price was right on the money, had great communication and shipped when promised strapped and wrapped on a pallet.

Mad - That wasn't a trans explosion. Not even close.
I like Cope in terms of "mail order transmissions", but I haven't used one. I do anything I need. However I do get parts from him and he's a great guy to talk and deal with.

Yes, I seen Crackedback's response and yours. It makes sense what you are saying. The front drum and gear train assembly are all still in tact. It is amazing how much damage a Driveshaft can do. Turn you into a cripple real quick.

I have a John Cope "Pro Street Tranny" in my 68 dart with a built 340. Excellent Tranny.

You could go to Dyno trans and speak with Steve. I worked there when I lived in Wildomar in 09. Just a thought.
