At what point....

-
That's nothing but a good start right there. Although I can say that I finally got to a point were I separated all wood work from all metal work(different buildings even). I always worried about making sparks (welding, grinding) and then going to bed, waking up to a smoldering pile of ash.

I learned my lesson years ago when my parents finally moved out of the house I grew up in. They'd been there about 30 years. It was a fairly small house that they'd always rented and they also managed two other smaller rentals and two apartments that were built over the garages - total of three 1-car garages and a single 2-car garage.
The day they started their move I showed up to help and nothing had been packed! My mom wanted to wake up living in one location and go to bed that night living in another with everything put away!
Turned out not only was the attic of the house completely full, but they'd also been using all of the garages for storage.
Needless to say, the move was not completed for several weeks and a lot of stuff was thrown away - stuff that hadn't seen the light of day for decades.

But I do have a spare bedroom completely full of car parts for my current '69 Dart build.

I am keeping "everything" so that my 2 children will have to get rid of it, pay back from when they were little

I started a Mopar Hi-Po business in 1984 with the help of my wonderful wife . I used to search in backyards for Mopars , buy them, take them home, strip them, call for the scrap man . Had this part time business for 13 years , worked full time . Lived south of Boston . There was NEVER any parts stowed outside . Fast forward to 2015 . Sent 6pairs of magnum heads , 727's, magnum intakes and exhaust manifolds , doors, trunks to the scrap . Moved to New Hampshire . Had to downsize . Have some parts left but not much . Moral : better to give it away to someone who wants it than to junk it . I will never come again .

Heres pics of bedroom(and more)we call "Dads room" as its been taken over from "some" of his inheritance.
Most of the tubs are sports cards/memoribilia that we collected together. .
Artie I think Dad shared the same sentiment as you! Lol

Reminds me of Tom, neighbor from Jersey. His folks were local. Both passed away, bad car wreck. Toms brother lived in Florida. Tom asked me to help him pack up what we were going to ship to Florida. Tom and his wife spent weeks sifting thru things, boxing up what was going to Florida. We built a crate...more like an 8' cube...on pallets...the 3 of us spent a full day loading it. Had ano external 2×4 frame. Was bulging between the lumber. Tom and his wife had to work, so I met the truck driver. He didn't even attempt to lift it with the pallet jack, called for a fork lift. Crate weighed in at over 4 tons...When it arrived at Tom's brother in Florida his brother removed the first piece of the lid....and it exploded...his brother got launched off of the ladder...broke both legs...

People tend to simplify as we get older. It's just human nature. The only thing I save anymore are my memories. Dont need the actual item the memories are enough.

I spy with my little eye...lol
It aint that bad Doug, but you did say "part of the room"
I "organized" the room today. At least I can pick a box/tub and go through it... someday lol

I was going to out there today...but went thru 4 pounds of jalapeño peppers instead. 3 pounds into candied jalapeño, rest got roasted. Noticed that we were running low on dog biscuits, made a couple batches of them as well. Starting to feel like I have "excusitis"....

Military was my downfall. So many years of not having much and can't take much. When we got out I made up for lost time. My poor kids when I die.
Not the military, but once my dad got laid off from Honeywell after working every possible minute for those a**hats, he started bringing stuff home with him. Started small with model train stuff, which he was already into, to absolute junk. He has gotten I don't know how many printers from Goodwill (I have a very different view of Goodwill DesertRat) to take parts for his layout. That was over 20 years ago and now the basement is full, can't get into about 85% of it, and I have to sadly wait until his death to be the only one to clean it all up. I'm not wishing anything bad happen to him but as stated earlier, any hoarder who says you can clean up their mess, doesn't really mean it. I've tried several times only to meet tougher resistance than the National Guard. I have told him to catalog his train and camera stuff to make it easier for me to deal with when the time comes.

I am a selective hoarder....I only hoard my cars and car parts. The main reason is because every time I sell a part or car, a year after I will be on ebay or CL trying to find what I basically had and I am usually forced to over pay, when could have just kept what I had in the first place and been happy.

I say selective hoarder because I don't mind having garage sales every summer and getting rid of household items and clothes I don't use anymore and ect. but nothing related to my car or model railroad hobby is for sale for any reason. As a result, my house is not cluttered but my barn and car storage is a cluttered nightmare and I don't intend to anything about it LOL

You guys might remember some years ago when I posted about Sarah's parents having a house fire.

It took almost two weeks to go through all the crap that was water damaged to put in the insurance claim or to just write off.

Most of it was just crap that had been hoarded for a lifetime of living in the house. Let that sink in, though. Two weeks of going through stuff.

When Sarah died the hardest part was going through her stuff during the move and then again when I was able to. Here it is over four years later and I've just now been able to weed out books, movies, etc.

I only half joke when I said the Egyptians had it right. All that **** they put in the Pharaohs' tombs? That wasn't for the reasons historians think. That was really just putting all the stuff in the tomb so they wouldn't have to go through it all and give themselves the grief.

I've tried to pair stuff down because I only have so much room. I've also done it so my loved ones won't have to.

Yeh Stevie... I see a lot of good stuff there... don't throw anything out unless it's the wifes. ..IE.That ol whiskey barrel would make good swish ( if there is such a thing haha )
