I tried searching on this subject not much luck.
Adding a lot of electrical items to my 71' dart.
thought it would be easier to mount a auxilary for the items so it would not tax the existing electrical system.
Just an idea,I'm not an electrical guy.
adding:
fuel pump
electric fans
electric water pump

this an logical idea? this way I could wire seperatly to the battery with a relay.

If you are gonna do this you need to go over to Mad electrical and read the thing there.

Dan doesn't like it but that's too damn bad. He's ignoring me, anyhow.

Especially read about bypassing the "full current" ammeter system and the bulkhead connector

http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/amp-gauges.shtml

The problems with the Mopar bulkhead connector and ammeter is that it was never designed for the kind of current that big fans and a water pump, even a hi perf. big fuel pump, along with stereos and other "stuff" draw for current. The stock system has to go through the bulkhead at least twice, and the ammeter is a poor design.

There are guys that have hacked up and converted to a so called "external shunt" ammeter, or just bypass it and go to a voltmeter.

Also, you will need a bunch larger alternator than the stocker.

Be sure what you are getting into on fans. A fan(s) that will cool a "big mota" in slow hot traffic draws a lot of current. There's a lot of B.S. out there in the "fan world."

thanks a lot of info there.
I was thinking of simplifying it by using this:

Yes I have a larger alternator, did that.
this way I was thinking I could run what I need plus use it to feed the gauges in the car.
Wanted to put in a new harness in this year but It will have to put it on next years list.
This way I wont need to re wire all this again, just replace the original harness.
I have Not had a ton of problems,it's a 40 year old car.

Any update on what you did?

Ended up going with a painless wiring 8 circuit wiring harnes and fuse box.
Removed all the original wiring harness and started fresh.
Installing everything on a piece of aluminum on the passenger side where the seat was.
The car is being transformed into a strip car only.
Going to miss having the old girl for the street, but I think next winter I am going to pick up another Dart for street only.
