axle bearing adjustment

Can anyone tell me why when I switched from a 489 rear to a 742 the axle bearing adjustment was way out of wack? the right side bearng adjuster is screwed out almost all the way so the little fitting to keep it from moving doesn't fit right. any ideas.

The puck in the third member is missing, dicked up, "other." Seems to me some of the early years (tapered axles) were different, that was a HELL of a long ways back

(According to one source, Suregrip units before 64 are different)
