In need of an alternator bracket for my 383 and came across one that only has one bolt hole for the alternator pivot. It's stated as fitting the low deck but the ones I always see (stamped steel anyway) have two bolt holes, for both B and RB. Des anybody know or have a bracket that they could measure to get the bolt hole distances? 4 3/4", 5 3/8", 5 1/2" are the bolt hole centers on the one I'm looking at. I appreciate any help and thank you in advance.

Are you looking for the cast bracket that bolts to the head?

BIG BLOCK MOPAR"BLACK"ALTERNATOR BRACKET 383 440 DODGE CHRYSLER bb mopar #6097BK | eBay. I'm trying to verify this will work with the 383/400 engine. I contacted the seller and he said it only fits the B engine. The listing also includes the distance for the mounting hole centerline that I posted previously. I'm just trying to verify so I don't waste time getting something I can't use. I don't have the engine accessible so I won't be able to check it either for a while.

The ad says both 383 and 440. The only way that fits both is with the head bracket I posted.

...... I contacted the seller and they said it only fits the B engine...... I am just trying to get a measurement to verify it is the same as the measurements listed in the ad...

No, these are the stamped steel ones - the triangular shaped one that bolts to the water pump/housing are the dimensions I need.
I will check today. Sorry for the late reply

Thank you for your help.... It's my OCD - I don't want any extra brackets or extra holes, plus the one listed is cheaper.....

Thank you for the info. I'm not really seeing the measurements that are listed for the part - 4 3/4", 5 3/8", and 5 1/2".... maybe the 4 3/4" and the 5 1/2"... but the longest measurement you show is at least 6 1/2" so the one I'm looking at might be OK. It's cheap enough so I'll order it & compare measurements. Thank you again for taking the time to help and post pics. Have a happy Thanksgiving <><

From what I remember the side with the two holes is for B and RB motors. looks like 4 1/2" vs 5 1/4" center to center. The other two sides are common.

what was the outcome... did the brkt you bought fit?

I just ran into a similar issue, my 383 is a 66 and the pump housing is different than the newer 383s. The upper most alt hole is directly below the T stat housing almost centered and is 6.25 away from the lower hole and the 383 hole in the brkt.

Keep your fingers crossed, he hasn't been on here for 10 months.

For the 1962-1966 big block water pump housing, a different bracket with longer reach for the higher bolt hole was used. The following image shows this bracket on my 440 which is using an early Direct Connection aluminum water pump housing which has the same mount:

The bracket I used here is an original from a 1966 361. This is the non-air conditioning bracket. The turquoise colored bracket in the earlier pictures looks to be this one too. It can be identified by the longer "arm", and it has no hole in the middle for temperature sensor access.

The bracket is apparently available from several vendors, but it looks to only be part of the entire kit of brackets/bolts/sleeves where I looked.

Dante's has it in a kit at DMPS-7301-7 Mopar Alternator Bracket Kit - 1966 & earlier Big Block without A/C - dantesparts.com.

NOTE: To use the upper hole in the bracket on a B-engine, such as the 383, the bracket shown in the following image was added to the head:

I ordered that kit yesterday. I'll report back!

Not following you here? Which upper hole?

The upper/outer hole at the top of the bracket, where the bolt is shown in the following diagram:

This hole is used on the raised block (RB) engine. If the same hole is used on the B engine, the other bracket is bolted to the head for the bolt to attach. With it mounted this way, the same belt, hose holder, etc. is used in either case, and the alternator sits a little higher on the B engine yielding similar clearance as with the RB, with the early bracket as well as the later style. Using the rear bracket on the head also dictates a shorter rear sleeve.

OK I get what the small black bracket is for.

it mounts to these two holes in the 383 head

and raise the alternator to the 440 height

allowing you to use this hole on the bracket

I just looked captain greasy over for the temp sensor. Its under an inch of dirt and grease on the drivers side of the housing pointing up next to the PS? boss
