Bent pushrods

I bought a '66 Charger 273 engine and was shocked when I removed the intake. Any ideas about how these pushrods got so badly bent? There was no damage to the tops of any of the pistons and only one valve seems a little sticky (may be bent). Haven't removed the timing cover yet but the timing chain appears intact. The timing cover hasn't been removed in a long time. No apparent other valvetrain damage other than the pushrods.

If the engine sat for a long time the valves could have been stuck/rusted in the guides. If someone tried to turn the engine over it could bend the pushrods. Just spitballing.
 
Those are my thoughts as well.
If the engine has sat for an extended period of time…….. my vote is for stuck valves.

In any case……..it’s likely stuck “something”.

The chain may be intact, but was the cam timed correctly?
Cranking or turning the engine over by hand with the cam timed incorrectly could have bent the pushrods without much damage to the pistons.
Just another guess. You'll know once you pull the timing cover off.
 
I agree with Michael. Has a slant do that. Still ran with a skip. Car had sat for about 10years in a wet carriage house before the owner tried starting it.

Bought that car for a song. New push rod after freeing up the valve and ran like a top.
 
A few years ago I bought a 74 Duster with a 318 and the P.O. replaced the timing chain. Car ran fairly decent so didn't think anything about it. I put a 4 Bbl manifold and carb on it and it started backfiring at a higher RPM. I knew it wasn't the carb, because it was good on another motor. I decided to pull a valve cover and saw a few bent push rods, 2 were almost bent at about 70* and some a lot less. I replaced all the rods and it runs great now. So then I knew why chain was replaced.
 
ha had i sm block chevy pu jumped time bent 15 push rods
couldn't believe how good that ran with new chain and a set of rods
my 67 pu with a slant had 2 bent push rods ...i guess the valves stuck ...everything inside the engine looked new..bought it that way
 
These are aftermarket pushrods, denoting a higher lift Cam, maybe even solid lifter roller or flat tappet.
Stock pushrods are ball on each end, no cup.
Somebody did not do the valve lash correctly. Probably just zero'd them out.
You can tell this is exactly what happened because of the way they are bent. The top cup and the ball trunnion on the bottom of the rocker had no room to rotate, so it hit the rocker base to bend the pushrod.
Bottom of the rockers are probably all beat up on the bottoms and the ball trunnions are probably wallowed out badly also.

Sorry but Stock 273 solid lifter pushrods are not ball/ball. They are ball and cup. It is a "Charger 273" engine and all 273 engines were solid lifter from 64-67, 2 and 4 barrel. . 68 and 69 changed to hydraulic and was available in 2 barrel only.
