Best way to remove nipples on water pump?

-
I like the tool you found. I think you are being reasonably causious especially if it is your first time. Dont hesitate to ask questions, but try not to over think things. Speaking from first hand knowledge.

Heat the nipple.
Rub paraffin wax on the nipple, letting the wax drip down into the threads.
Put wp housing in vise carefully.
Twist nipples out with a pipe wrench.
Watched my machine shop do it. Easy Peasy.

I know this i an old thread but...

I just removed 4 nipples from 2 383 water pump housings, 3 came out with no issue using the rod down the nipple and monkey wrench method (Heat and penetratingly fluid also)

One of the long ones decide to fight tooth and nail. I tried every thing I could through at it. I which I had seen this thread first, the internal pipe wrench and the hammer in removers would have been a nice thing to try. BUT i did prevail! I ended up cutting the pipe off near the housing and then used a hack saw blade to cut the inside of the pipe, folded it in on itself and out it came. Minimal damage to the treads. (I bought a set of taps and ran them in to tidy up the buggered threads)

The square head plug was not having anything to do with it either, I about twisted an antique craftsman 3/8 breaker bar end and ended up almost rounding out the square. I decided to drill a hole through the center to be able to drill out a larger hole and do the same as the long pipe but after removing the metal I tried once again with the 3/8" drive and it came out. On the other housing it to wasn't budging but I'm selling it so I left it in place

find a bolt 7/16 or 3/8 what ever you can get down the pipe and use a pipe wrench, heat the nipple as described, then cool use penetrating oil, then heat the casting, the bolt will keep the pipe from smashing in and will take it out.
good luck
THIS. Most hardware stores have both US and metric bolts, usually you can find something. If you just "can't" then grind one down, tapered, and drive it in. You are not trying to save the nipple, you are trying not to hurt the manifold

AND ALWAYS remember my life's philosophy.

"You cannot break it if it's broken, but you can fix it so it cannot be fixed."

I've "fixed" a few things............................

I'm strangely aroused by this post.

As far as this thread goes, I never hammer anything inside anything threaded that I'm trying to remove. There's no better way to lock a fastener or pipe in place than by swaging the dang thing in there.
If you have to hammer it in there in order for it to get a grip, then it's applying pressure outward. Unless the wall thickness is ridiculously huge, it's going to expand it, risking locking it in tighter.
