big bolt pattern for 7-1/4 rear??

-

Interesting. Need to look into this further. Can't take anything apart at this time, as the rears are stacked like cord wood.

I wonder if the backing plates have 5 holes (for more applications) and the housing flange on the 7 1/4 only has four holes. The bolt pattern on the rear I have looks like the bottom bolt has been eliminated (it is not broken off).

It gets curiouser and curiouser. Just looked at the 8 1/4 rears (89 dip car, and 88 dip) both have only 4 brake flange mounting bolts. The 89 rear I got with a bunch of other parts, so cannot verify year or model. The 88 diplomat, is mine/wifes, that I bought new in 1988. Everything is OEM original, except for normal maintainance items, and deletion of the lean burn.

Hey Charlie I went out to the semi trailer to look at the rear end again. Your right, it only has 4 bolts on the housing but five bolt holes on the brake plate. Also 3” tubes that neck down at the carrier.

Thanks for confirming that for me. The rears I have are complete, and in a position of my not being to take any apart. We learn something new every day.
They say any day you learn something new is a day not wasted.
