There is a UPS store a few blocks from my house. I used to use them a lot, but their prices kept going up and up. Plus they are never even close to what that UPS website quotes. I know that the UPS store will be a bit more than going to a UPS office, but the price increases over the website ant this place are crazy. I sold an item to someone on this forum. I needed a box 44" x 10" x 6". So I went to the UPS store (for the last time ever), and they had a 48" x 10" x 6" box. I figured I could cut it down a few inches. Believe it or not, they wanted $27 just for the box and $97 for shipping. $97 from KS to CA via regular UPS ground???? I asked the guy if he put the data in right, and he said yes. I said "I put same weight and dimensions in your website and it said $35." He said "You must have put it in wrong." I hate UPS. This isn't the first time I've had something like this happen with them. Anyway, I wound up buying a box with the same dimensions from FEDEX for only $10 and shipping was only $34. I would love to tell someone in UPS management about this, but I would never be able to find someone who cared.

Open an account with UPS and print the label, the UPS store will take it. The UPS store in privately owned not like UPS which is a corporate owned company.

Exactly. I had an experience just like OP - took it to my UPS hub and paid what the website said. They told me the same: the stores are private and have their own markups because they're 'conveniently located'.

Oh hell no.......and try calling UPS. What a joke. The don't want you getting through. It's really painfully obvious.

U-Haul also sells boxes.... If I remember they are very reasonable, like less than a buck a box for medium size packing boxes...

Don't buy boxes, Wal*Mart gives them away for free.

I sent a friend on this forum a one gallon Brita container... They could not find one that big near them locally... I took it to the local UPS store here and paid for them to pack and ship it...

They were too busy to pack it while I was there and took it in to pack later...

It got to the member and the UPS guy literally walked by them and threw it about 10 feet onto their porch...

The UPS store that packed it didn't use any packing/filler to pad the item in their shipping box and it shifted around and cracked the bottom corner of the Brita container...

So I buy another one and bring it to the UPS store to replace the one that they broke and started the "insurance claim" with them... They wanted me to pay to ship the replacement Brita to replace the one that they broke... I told them that they should ship it for free since I already paid for them to pack and ship it before and they broke it - they did not deliver on their responsibility... I told them that I don't reward failure with more business... Not to mention that they now wanted expediting charges to get it to the member before Christmas as it was my Christmas gift to them...

I walked out of the UPS store and took it to the post office, and not only were they able to get it to the member without extra expediting charges, they were cheaper than the UPS regular shipping quote...

I don't use UPS anymore because of this...

They never did follow up with the insurance claim (I did have it insured)...

One of these days there may be a brick in their front window.... (Then the insurance claim will be even...)

My local UPS hub told me it's not uncommon to be cheaper to ship from home ! And they have no way of weighing it if they pickitup. Of course if it's way off they will know .

Find a friend with a business account and ship from his biz . WAY CHEAPER !

When I packed at the steel warehouse, we had a scale and software to ship and print the labels for our UPS shipments... If the package was over the 150 lb weight limit, the guys would fudge the weight and manually and over ride the entry so it would be within the weight limits... UPS never caught them as far as I know....

FYI Lowe’s sells boxes dirt cheap. Medium and Heavy Duty. They don’t have a lot of sizes but if it is to large for one box you can sleeve them together.

All true. But I needed a very unusual size (44x10x6). Normally I would have made one, but I just didn't feel like messing with it.

Shipping prices...no matter who you use...are effing ridiculous....I ordered something a few weeks back. Took 11 days to get it UPS ground....from Seattle....I live near Spokane.

My sympathies, Rob, and no suggestions. I've had a battle or two with various shippers
